Agarwal's winning streak continues; Haryana, Punjab, Bengal, and Tamil Nadu reach the knockouts.
Tamil Nadu, Bengal, Haryana and Rajasthan will clash in the pre-quarterfinal.
Mayank Agarwal scored his fourth List A century in five matches, helping Karnataka reach the knockout stage of the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Defending champions Haryana, along with Punjab, Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, also made it to the knockouts.
Mumbai, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy winners, did not qualify for the knockouts. They finished third in Group C with five wins from seven matches. Losses to Karnataka and Punjab hurt their chances, but they ended their campaign with a win on Sunday. Teenage opener Aayush Mhatre scored an unbeaten 148 to lead Mumbai to victory over Saurashtra in a 290-run chase.
Aayush Mhatre, who made his List A debut for Mumbai in this tournament, ended as the team’s top run-scorer with 458 runs from seven innings. His performance included two centuries and a half-century. The only other player to score centuries for Mumbai was captain Shreyas Iyer. Iyer hit two hundreds – an unbeaten 114 off 55 balls in a losing match against Karnataka and a match-winning 137 not out from 133 balls against Puducherry.
Punjab reached the knockouts with strong batting displays, posting huge scores of 424 and 426 against Saurashtra and Hyderabad. On Sunday, they scored 338 to defeat Puducherry by 167 runs, finishing the group stage with six wins from seven matches. Despite this, Karnataka topped the group after narrowly beating Punjab by one wicket.
Even with that loss, Punjab advanced as the best second-placed team across all groups and secured a direct spot in the quarter-finals. Wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh led their charge with three centuries – 150* against Mumbai, 125 against Saurashtra, and 137 against Hyderabad.
Prabhsimran's opening partnership with captain Abhishek Sharma has been vital for Punjab. Together, they scored 298 runs against Saurashtra, matching the tournament's second-highest opening stand, a record set by Bengal’s Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sudip Gharami in 2022. In that match, Abhishek smashed 170 off 96 balls, while Prabhsimran made 125.
Punjab’s success was also driven by their leading pacer Arshdeep Singh, who topped the wicket-taking charts with 17 wickets in six matches at an economy rate of 5.53. His best performance was 5 for 38 against Mumbai.
In other news, Gujarat and Vidarbha were the only teams to win all their group matches. Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Bengal made the knockouts despite losing two matches each.
Gujarat’s campaign was driven by fast bowlers Chintan Gaja and Arzan Nagwaswalla, who ranked second and third among wicket-takers. Vidarbha's strong run was led by Karun Nair’s record-breaking form, with four centuries in five innings.
Nair holds the record for the most List A runs without getting out. He currently has 542 runs, second only to Mayank Agarwal’s 613 from seven innings, which includes four hundreds and a half-century.
