All Hopes on Shami's Return, while Akash Deep has been ruled out for a month

All Hopes on Shami's Return, while Akash Deep has been ruled out for a month

Mohammed Shami last played for India in the 2023 World Cup.

Mohammed Shami the star bowler of the Indian team is expected to return for the series that is going to be against England and for the Champions Trophy too. Shami has been sidelined since the World Cup in November 2023 due to his injury. And has recently started playing for the white-ball cricket and might be able to play for the Indian team.
On that BCCI the Board of Control For Cricket in India has said that Medical Team NCA has been monitoring Shami’s injury closely as he went for the surgery of the right heel. However, his heel has been healed properly but there is some knee swelling which also makes him ruled out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. And now playing for the Vijay Hazare Trophy game for Bengal and all ready for the pre-quarterfinal that is going to be against Haryana in Baroda.
According to the BCCI, Shami is being closely monitored by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) medical team, with at least one NCA physio or trainer always with him. A couple of them were with him in Rajkot during the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, and recently, an NCA physio was seen watching both Shami and Hardik Pandya in Hyderabad.
Selection committee members are expected to attend the Vijay Hazare Trophy knockout matches in Baroda to closely watch Shami's performance. Early signs show that his bowling is unaffected, and he seems to be doing well. While the NCA's approval is necessary for his return, there is growing optimism about him.
Pacer Akash Deep is unlikely to play in the upcoming white-ball series against England, along with a few of his India teammates. Akash Deep, who missed the fifth and final Test against Australia at the SCG due to back pain, is expected to be sidelined for at least a month. Once back in India, he will report to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) or the newly named Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Initially, Akash Deep will likely miss the five T20 Internationals against England, the first of which is on January 22 in his hometown, Kolkata. Although he hasn't yet made his white-ball debut, his stock has risen in recent months, and he could have been considered for selection, especially with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj missing. Both Bumrah and Siraj are also expected to sit out the England T20 series due to the heavy workload they had during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. They bowled over 150 overs each in that series and need rest for future commitments, including the Champions Trophy.
Bumrah’s situation remains uncertain, as selectors are waiting for a report from the NCA. They hope he will be fit for the Champions Trophy (February 19 to March 9), but he will need clearance from the NCA. Bumrah, who couldn’t bowl in the second innings at the SCG because of back spasms, is expected to report to the NCA soon.
The selection committee is likely to meet around the BCCI AGM (January 12) to pick the teams for the white-ball series against England and a provisional squad for the Champions Trophy. England will play five T20Is and three ODIs from January 22 to February 12.
