Ashutosh surprises LSG as DC pulls off a thrilling one-wicket win
IPL 2025: Ashutosh Sharma's hitting Delhi Capitals a thrilling one-wicket win against Lucknow Super Giants.
Ashutosh Sharma had a slow start, scoring 20 runs off 20 balls, while Delhi Capitals (DC) were struggling with a required run rate of over 12 in their IPL 2025 opener against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Visakhapatnam. But then, he turned the game around, smashing 46 runs off his next 11 balls. Thanks to Ashutosh's heroics, DC secured a thrilling one-wicket win with three balls to spare. His teammates celebrated, while Rishabh Pant, DC's former captain now leading LSG, watched in disbelief.
Earlier, LSG batted first and posted 209 for 8, powered by explosive innings from Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh. At one point, LSG seemed on track to score 250, but DC's bowlers fought back strongly, taking six wickets and giving away just 48 runs in the last seven overs. Pooran and Marsh contributed 147 off 66 balls, while the rest of LSG's batters managed only 55 runs off 55 balls.
DC's chase got off to a disastrous start, losing three wickets for just seven runs. Things looked bleak, but debutant Vipraj Nigam, coming in at No. 8, smashed a quickfire 39 off 15 balls. His dismissal left DC needing 42 runs off 23 balls, but Ashutosh stepped up and finished the job in style, hitting the winning six off Shahbaz Ahmed.
Ashutosh had been a star finisher for Punjab Kings in IPL 2024, delivering brilliant performances even though they often ended in losses. Now with DC, he proved his worth as their Impact Player, coming in at a tough spot (65 for 5 in 6.4 overs), starting cautiously, and ensuring he stayed until the end to seal an incredible win.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) scored 209 runs, thanks to explosive performances by Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh. Pooran smashed 75 off 30 balls, and Marsh added 72 off 36. At one stage, LSG looked set for 250, but DC's bowlers, led by Mitchell Starc and Kuldeep Yadav, fought back strongly in the last seven overs, taking six wickets and restricting LSG to 209.
In the chase, Delhi Capitals (DC) had a disastrous start, losing three early wickets for just seven runs. Debutant Vipraj Nigam scored a quick 39 off 15 balls to give DC hope, but it was Ashutosh Sharma's incredible knock that won the game. He started cautiously but later went on a rampage, scoring 66 off 31 balls, including hitting the winning six in the final over.
Shardul Thakur played a key role in DC's bowling, while DC's top order struggled, showing great resilience to pull off a thrilling one-wicket win.
Brief Score: Delhi Capitals: 211/9 (Ashutosh 66*, Nigam 39, Rathi 2-31, Siddharth 2-39) beat Lucknow Super Giants: 209/8 (Pooran 75, Marsh 72, Starc 3-42, Kuldeep 2-20) by one wicket.
