Ashwin’s Century Puts India Back in Command

Ashwin’s Century Puts India Back in Command

Ashwin's unbeaten 195* partnership with Jadeja reinforced some old truths at the start of the season.

Ravindrachadran Ashwin made a great century that led to India’s finest comeback in the match on the opening day of the first with Bangladesh. Ashwin was able to make 102 runs meanwhile Jadeja secured 86 runs they made in the partnership together till the seventh wicket that helped India Gains Momentum After Early Setbacks in Initial Sessions. Despite Yashasvi Jaiswal’s half-century, India found themselves struggling at 144 for 6, mainly due to Hasan Mahmud’s sharp bowling. However, Ashwin and Jadeja mounted an impressive counterattack, adding 195 runs in just 227 balls, taking India to 339/6 by the end of the first day
India was able to make only 88 runs and already lost three wickets in the starting two sessions, but Ashwin and Jadeja made a great impact and made 20 fours and 4 sixes helping the Indian cricket team to reach the top in the final sessions to score 163 runs at a rate of over five an over. On the other hand, Bangladesh had a poor over rate and managed only 23 runs in 25 overs in the first two sessions, and was able to bowl 32 overs in their final sessions on Day 1.
Bangladesh capitalized on favourable bowling conditions after choosing to bowl first. Taskin Ahmed challenged Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma in the opening session, with Rohit narrowly escaping an lbw review off Mahmud’s bowling due to the umpire’s call. However, Rohit soon edged one to second slip, giving Mahmud his first wicket. Shubman Gill was dismissed for a duck, caught down the leg side, and Virat Kohli edged to the 'keeper, all off Mahmud’s bowling, leaving India struggling at 34 for 3.”
Nahid Rana’s fast bowling brought new challenges, but Rishabh Pant, playing Test cricket again after almost two years, settled in by hitting some boundaries. Pant and Jaiswal built a steady 62-run partnership, regularly hitting boundaries and rotating the strike. Pant liked Rana’s pace, while Jaiswal hit a few boundaries off Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Pant had a couple of close calls before lunch, hitting a short ball from Taskin that fell short of the fielder and edging another delivery that landed just short of first slip, where Shadman Islam reacted late.
Meanwhile, Mahmud does not stop troubling the cricket team and easily dismisses the Pant for 39 after completing the lunch. Jaiswal and KL Rahul played carefully for a while. Jaiswal reached his fifty but couldn't continue for long. He got out after edging a short ball from Rana, ending their 48-run partnership. Soon after, Rahul was caught at short-leg by Mehidy, putting India in more trouble.
Ashwin played aggressively, hitting regular boundaries before and after the Tea break, with Jadeja providing solid support. Jadeja hit a six off Mahmud in the final session and successfully used a review to overturn an LBW decision. Ashwin then hit two fours off Mahmud, bringing up their fifty-run partnership. Bangladesh lost a review for an LBW decision. Shakib Al Hasan started bowling in the 53rd over, and Jadeja welcomed him with a four, while Ashwin hit his first six with a slog-sweep. Jadeja then hit another six and followed it with two more boundaries.
Ashwin brought up a 58-ball fifty and the 100-run stand was raised off only 114 deliveries. Ashwin collected two more fours, playing a ramp shot and a glance off Rana. The regular frequency of boundaries, along with the singles and twos, frustrated the Bangladesh team. Jadeja and Ashwin surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's and Zaheer Khan's 133-run partnership, in 2004, to register India's highest seventh-wicket stand against Bangladesh. Jadeja then brought up his fifty and put away short balls from Mehidy for a couple of boundaries.
A lovely cover drive by Jadeja off Rana extended the partnership past 150 before Ashwin sent a Mehidy delivery over the fence to power India past 300. Ashwin got into the 90s with a cut shot for four off Rana before Jadeja clubbed Mehidy for a four and a six. On 95, Ashwin was fortunate that the edge off Shakib's bowling went wide of slip for a couple of runs. He went on to bring up his sixth Test hundred - and his second in Chennai - before Jadeja entered the 80s with a four off Shakib ahead of Stumps.
End of Days Play
