Australia takes a 2-1 lead as India struggles in the final session
After a wicketless session, India lost seven wickets for 34 runs to secure a famous win at MCG.
Australia secured a memorable win, with Pat Cummins's team causing India to lose 7 wickets for just 34 runs in the last session, putting them ahead 2-1 in the series.
Rishabh Pant made a risky choice early after Tea by hitting an easy ball from part-timer Travis Head, which was caught by Mitchell Marsh at long-on. This moment marked a turning point for Australia, especially after they had gone without taking any wickets in the middle session. Pant's poor decision disrupted India's hopes of drawing the match, as Australia took two more wickets within just 27 deliveries.
Scott Boland bowled a ball that leapt sharply from a good length, and Ravindra Jadeja, trying to defend, ended up nicking it to the keeper. Nathan Lyon then boosted Australia’s hopes of taking the lead in the series by having Nitish Reddy, who had scored a century in the first innings, edge the ball to Steve Smith at first slip for just 1 run. India quickly slipped from 121/3 to 130/6, giving Australia a lift in confidence.
Washington Sundar stepped in with five close-in fielders around him, eager and chatty as he looked for a win. Sam Konstas, stationed at Silly Point, was particularly animated, trying to irritate both Washington and Jaiswal with his constant banter. After Boland's brief but effective spell, Cummins returned to the attack and made a significant impact by taking the wicket of Jaiswal.
Indian opener tries to go for the pull but is not able to connect well. Australia appealed for a caught behind, and Cummins decided to review it right after umpire Joel Wilson rejected their call. The replays showed that the ball changed direction as it went past the bat and the glove, but the Snicko didn’t show a significant spike. Nonetheless, the third umpire reversed the on-field decision based on the ball's deviation, leaving India with seven wickets down. Akash Deep then lasted for 16 balls before edging Boland to Head at forward short leg.
The fifth day ended just like it started, with India struggling under pressure. Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli all fell to the new ball. Rohit, the captain, tried to flick a full delivery from Pat Cummins but ended up edging it to the gully fielder. Rahul faced a great delivery from Cummins in the same over that he couldn't avoid, leading to his dismissal. Kohli continued his bad habit of chasing a ball outside the off-stump, edging it right before Lunch.
In the middle session, Jaiswal and Pant showed some resistance, giving India a glimmer of hope. But as the game continued, all nine fielders crowded around the bat, trying to get two more wickets with 15 overs left to play. Boland managed to get Bumrah to edge one to Smith at first slip, and Lyon finished the match by trapping Mohammed Siraj leg before wicket.
