Australia vs. England 150th Anniversary Test: A Pink-Ball Day-Night Match in 2027

The 150th anniversary test between Australia and England will be held under lights at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from March 11-15, 2027.

Cricket Australia has announced a special one-off Test match between Australia and England at the MCG in March 2027 to celebrate 150 years of men’s Test cricket. This match, scheduled from March 11 to 15, will be a pink-ball day-night game, marking the first time a men’s day-night Test will be held at the MCG.
The match celebrates the first-ever Test played at the MCG in 1877 between Australia and England. Unlike the original 1877 Test and the Centenary Test in 1977, both played with the red ball during the day, this celebration match will take place under lights. The change is aimed at increasing crowd attendance, as it will happen during a school and work year, and improving global TV viewership, especially in the UK where the night session will be in the morning.
CA chief executive Todd Greenberg thanked the Victorian government and Melbourne Cricket Club for supporting the idea of a day-night match. He expressed excitement, saying this 150th-anniversary game would celebrate cricket's history while highlighting its modern evolution. He also recalled iconic moments from the 1977 Centenary Test, such as David Hookes' five consecutive boundaries and Rick McCosker batting with a broken jaw.
This match is part of a packed 2027 calendar for the Australian men’s team. Before this game, they’ll play four home Tests against New Zealand and then a five-Test series in India. The one-off Test will overlap with the start of the IPL, set for March 14, 2027. Later in the year, they could feature in the World Test Championship final if they qualify and then play a five-match Ashes series in England. The 2027 ODI World Cup will follow in October and November.
Although this anniversary match won’t be part of the World Test Championship, it promises to be a thrilling and historic occasion for players and fans alike.
