BCCI ends Abhishek Nayar's role as India's assistant coach

BCCI ends Abhishek Nayar's role as India's assistant coach

Ahead of the England tour, the BCCI terminates contracts from the Indian Men's team coaching staff, along with T Dilip and Soham Desai.

The BCCI has decided to part ways with Abhishek Nayar, less than a year after appointing him as the assistant coach for India's men's national team.
Nayar, who took on the role in July last year, is the first notable departure following the BCCI's review of India's poor Test cricket performance. The slump began with a 3-0 home series loss to New Zealand and was followed by a 3-1 defeat in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After the team’s return from Australia, the BCCI held a detailed review meeting with India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
A former Mumbai all-rounder who played three ODIs for India, Nayar was personally selected by Gambhir for the assistant coach role. While Gambhir received a three-year contract until the 2027 ODI World Cup, Nayar’s exact tenure was unclear.
Previously, Gambhir and Nayar worked together at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during IPL 2024, playing a vital role in the team’s triumph—their first IPL title in a decade. Though Nayar lacks experience coaching at the domestic level, he has mentored many top international and uncapped Indian players, including Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi.
Recently, KL Rahul praised Nayar’s contributions to his white-ball success, stating, "Big shoutout to Abhishek Nayar. I've worked a lot with him ever since he's come into the Indian team."
Speculation about Nayar's future began in late January when the BCCI appointed former Saurashtra batter Sitanshu Kotak as the batting coach ahead of the white-ball home series against England. Both Kotak and Nayar, along with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and fielding coach T Dilip, had traveled to the Champions Trophy as part of Gambhir's coaching staff.
