Chakravarthy's Five Wickets Not Enough As Stubbs Guides South Africa Through Tough Game
South Africa were struggling at 66 for 6 in a small chase before Stubbs and Coetzee turned the game around
Tristan Stubbs played a bang game this time, scoring 47 runs off 41 balls, while Gerald Coetzee made a quick contribution of 19 runs off 9 balls. This helped South Africa level the series after they were struggling at 86 for 7 in their chase of 124 runs, ultimately winning by three wickets. Varun Chakaravarthy had an impressive bowling performance with figures of 5 for 17, but it didn't help the visitors, who failed to match their strong batting from two nights earlier.
Unlike the first T20I, India’s innings struggled to get going. They lost three wickets in the first four overs, which hurt their chances. Sanju Samson, who had scored centuries in his previous two matches, was out for a duck after being bowled by Marco Jansen in the very first over, which was also a wicket-maiden. South Africa decided to use their fast bowlers during the PowerPlay, just like they did not do two days ago, and they quickly saw results, with Gerald Coetzee taking the wicket of Abhishek Sharma, who top-edged a pull shot to short fine-leg after the umpire overturned a caught-behind decision.
Suryakumar Yadav was given LBW to an Andile Simelane yorker which worsened things for India as India was at 15 for 3. But Axar tried and gave two boundaries that were against Simelane. Tilak Verma started off great with a six but his happiness was short as David Miller took a one-handed catch and with 20 runs his time came to an end.
Axar hit two more fours off Nqaba Peter before getting run out at the bowler's end from a straight drive by Hardik Pandya. The South African bowlers did well to keep Pandya from scoring for most of his innings, as he only hit his first boundary on his 27th ball in the 17th over. Meanwhile, Peter took his second wicket by getting Rinku Singh out, who lifted a slog-sweep to Coetzee.
After that Pandeya carried away his series and was able to hit two fours and a six on Jansen's ball and get the strike while batting with Arshdeep Singh. In the last over India made only 6 runs but Aiden Markram and Coetzee dropped off the catch.
In response, South Africa hit four fours in the first three overs. Ryan Rickelton then tried to hit a slower ball from Arshdeep and ended up getting caught at deep backward square-leg. New batsman Markram was shaken up by a bouncer from Pandya that hit him on the helmet, and in the next over, Chakravarthy bowled him out. The offspinner also got rid of Reeza Hendricks in his second over.
Promoting Marco Jansen didn’t pay off, as he was bowled out by Chakaravarthy. Chakaravarthy then caught the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller out one after the other, leaving the hosts in a tough spot at 66 for 6. Stubbs stayed alert and carefully looked at the conditions throughout. Meanwhile, Simelane, who was gaining confidence, tried a big swing and ended up losing his wicket.
In the last four overs, there were only 37 runs required, India decided to use fast bowlers, and South Africa quickly picked up the pace when Coetzee hit a huge 103-meter six off Arshdeep. He followed that by scoring two more fours off Avesh Khan, adding 12 runs in that over. Stubbs then secured the victory for South Africa in the second-to-last over by hitting four fours against Arshdeep Singh.
Scorecard : India 124/6 in 20 overs (Hardik Pandya 39*, Axar Patel 27; Aiden Markram 1-4, Nqaba Peter 1-20) lost to South Africa 128/7 in 19 overs (Tristan Stubbs 47*, Reeza Hendricks 24; Varun Chakravarthy 5-17, Ravi Bishnoi 1-21) by 3 wickets
