Challenges in Pakistan Cricket: The Impact of Nepotism and Favoritism
Pakistan's recent performances in international cricket have sparked debate over the invasion of politics in sport, with claims of nepotism at the top spot.
Due to political interference and nepotism, the Pakistan cricket team has been struggling a lot lately as they have dropped to ninth place in the test ranking along with a home series to Bangladesh. As well as Mohsin Naqvi PCB Chairmen has faced criticism because of his dual roles and qualifications, More and more people are asking him to quit because parliament and the media are paying closer attention to him.
There's been talk about politics affecting sports due to Pakistan's poor results in international cricket. People say that favouritism at the top is stopping the team from making progress. Last week, after losing a home series to Bangladesh 0-2, Pakistan fell to ninth place in the Test rankings, their lowest position in nearly sixty years.
This would be the tenth Consecutive home test match that happened without a victory and it occurred because the team faced an embarrassing early elimination from 50th over along with the previous year’s T20 World Cup. Mohsin Naqvi is currently the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and also serves as the interior minister of a country facing a rise in terrorist attacks.
For the last 24 months, Pakistan Cricket has been experiencing three different board chairs, four different coaches, three different captains as well as multiple domestic competition formats- unpredictability that analysts attribute to political whims.
Cricket journalist and former PCB media manager Ahsan Iftikhar Nagi made a statement and said This leads to a ripple effect, impacting the team's performance. When there's chaos and ongoing instability in the board's management, it will show in the team's on-field performances," he told AFP.
Undoubtedly cricket is Pakistan’s favourite sport with players celebrated as national heroes, endorsed by luxury brands, and playing in packed stadiums for major matches. With a population of over 240 million, the sport holds significant cultural and political importance, as it unites people across all social divides.
In the 1992 ODI World Cup when the former Prime minister led his team to win he used that achievement of his to get into the political career. He served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, but is currently in jail on charges he claims were fabricated to prevent him from participating in this year's elections.
On Monday, he issued a statement from prison, outlining his grievances about his incarceration and blaming political intrigues for the issues in cricket.
"Favorites have been appointed to manage a technical sport like cricket. What are Mohsin Naqvi's qualifications?" he questioned, accusing Naqvi of "destroying" the team.
He further claimed, "Nations are ruined when corrupt and incompetent individuals are placed in positions of power within state institutions."
Nepotism and favouritism are widespread in Pakistan. Commentators note that Khan campaigned on an anti-corruption platform, but his election victory and rise to power were supported by the strong military establishment.
During his time in office, the former superstar appointed his preferred PCB chief and interfered with the local cricket structure, which coincided with the national team's decline.
