CSK ends the losing streak with help from Dhoni, Noor, and Jadeja

CSK ends the losing streak with help from Dhoni, Noor, and Jadeja

IPL 2025: Dhoni and Jadeja end the losing streak after five consecutive losses of the tournament, beating Lucknow Super Giants by 5 wickets.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were in danger of losing their sixth match in a row when MS Dhoni came in to bat alongside Shivam Dube. With just five overs left and 56 runs needed, Dhoni played a quick and powerful knock, scoring 26 runs from 11 balls without getting out. Dube also stayed unbeaten, making 43 runs in 27 balls, helping CSK secure their second victory in seven matches in IPL 2025.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant admitted that his team fell short by 10-15 runs after being asked to bat first. Pant himself scored a solid 63 runs from 49 balls his first half-century for LSG but the team only managed 166 for 7 in their 20 overs, their lowest score of the season. LSG struggled against CSK's bowlers, with Ravindra Jadeja taking two wickets and Noor Ahmad keeping things tight by giving away just 13 runs in his four overs.
CSK had a strong start in their chase, but LSG spinners fought back. Digvesh Rathi, Ravi Bishnoi, and Aiden Markram bowled well, taking a total of four wickets while conceding only 66 runs in 11 overs. However, Shardul Thakur's expensive 19th over cost LSG dearly, sealing their defeat in the match.
Dhoni and Dube took charge against the pacers when it mattered most
At the start of the 16th over, Dube had struggled to get going, scoring just 17 runs off his first 20 balls. He couldn’t dominate the spinners as he usually does, and the quick wickets of Vijay Shankar and Jadeja had put extra pressure on CSK.
But Dhoni thrives against pace. Since IPL 2024, he had an incredible strike rate of 222 against fast bowlers, and LSG gave him exactly that. Even with one over of Bishnoi’s spin left, they opted for Avesh Khan and Thakur, sticking to a wide-yorker strategy that became too predictable.
Dhoni made the most of it. He got lucky with a couple of edges that ran away for fours, but his real power showed when he smashed a cover drive for a boundary, flicked a full toss over midwicket, and even pulled off a one-handed six over deep square-leg a signature Dhoni moment.
Dhoni and Dube’s quick runs helped CSK to victory. Dhoni ran smart singles with Dube and kept the pressure off his partner. In the 19th over, Thakur bowled two full tosses, which Dube smashed for a four and a six, with the six coming off a no-ball. Dhoni won his first IPL Player-of-the-Match award since 2019, and their partnership of 57 runs in just 28 balls sealed the win.
Youngster Shaik Rasheed made a strong debut for CSK. With Devon Conway struggling for runs, CSK gave Rasheed a chance, and he didn’t disappoint. He played confidently, scoring 27 runs off 19 balls, hitting six fours, including a shot compared to Virat Kohli’s. His solid start, along with Rachin Ravindra’s 37 from 22 balls, gave CSK a much-needed opening partnership before the team faced trouble against spin.
LSG captain Rishabh Pant fought hard to score 63 runs. Pant walked in early with his team in trouble and started positively, playing clever shots, including a reverse lap for six. However, he struggled against CSK’s spinners, especially Noor Ahmad, scoring only six runs off 15 balls against him. After 40 runs in 39 balls, Pant finally picked up his scoring rate against fast bowlers but couldn’t stay until the end. CSK’s bowlers ensured LSG finished with only 166 runs, with Mitchell Marsh’s 30 being their second-best score.
