Darwin will host international cricket matches again after 17 years
International cricket returns to Darwin after 17 years with T20Is. Cricket Australia is scheduling two T20Is against South Africa in August.
Darwin might host international cricket for the first time in 17 years, with Cricket Australia planning two T20 matches against South Africa in August. The final schedule is expected to be announced soon. South Africa is set to tour Australia for three T20Is and three ODIs, and the current plan is for Darwin to host the first two T20Is. After that, a T20I and an ODI are expected to be held in Cairns, with the final two ODIs in Mackay.
The schedule is still being finalized, and matches at TIO Stadium will depend on agreements being confirmed. If they go ahead, this would be a major boost for Darwin, which last hosted international cricket in 2008 when Bangladesh played two ODIs there.
NT Cricket CEO Gavin Dovey emphasized the goal of bringing international cricket back to the Northern Territory, noting how much the game has grown in popularity and global reach since Darwin last hosted a match. He pointed out examples like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and cricket's return to the Olympics in 2028.
These games would also be the first men's T20Is played in the Northern Territory, with over 100 T20Is already hosted across Australia. Since Darwin's last international match, 536 men's and women's games have been played across 27 venues in Australia.
Darwin has been making progress in hosting winter cricket events, especially with the growth of the Top End T20 league, which now includes Big Bash League teams and international sides. The August window is becoming more attractive for international cricket, with a two-Test series against Bangladesh planned for this time in 2026. Northern Queensland is expected to host one of those Tests, and Darwin might host the other. Hosting white-ball cricket during this period could also prevent schedule clashes with the BBL and free up Australia's summer calendar.
Dovey expressed optimism, saying the winter cricket window offers great benefits for both Australian cricket and the Northern Territory. He highlighted the potential economic and community impact of hosting international cricket, saying it would inspire local players and fans. He hopes these plans come to life and that Darwin can kick off Australia's international cricket season.
