On Day 1 of the second Test in Guyana, South Africa chose to bat first but were all out for 160 runs, because of Shamar Joseph's five-wicket haul. West Indies then struggled with their batting, ending the day at 97/7, with Wiaan Mulder taking most of their wickets. Jason Holder is still not out on 33 runs. A total of 17 wickets fell, making it a day dominated by bowlers. West Indies are still 63 runs behind as they head into Day 2, which starts at 7:30 PM IST (2:00 PM GMT). The game is evenly balanced, and the weather looks good for the next few days.
South Africa: First Session
The match started with South Africa winning the toss and going for the batting first because it would all be good with great grass covering. Aiden Markram started well for South Africa with a four in the first over. Tony de Zorzi, who played well in Trinidad, got bowled out as the ball moved inward. The West Indian bowlers managed to control South Africa's scoring in the first hour with some sideways movement.
Now Joseph who has arrived for the Kemar Roach stuck two times in this third over. He bowled out Markram with a ball that moved back in sharply after Markram left it. Then, he bowled a similar delivery that stayed low, trapping captain Temba Bavuma in front of the stumps. After the drinks break, Tristan Stubbs and David Bedingham tried to fight back, but Stubbs got out by edging a ball to slip.
Bedingham and Mulder both edged the ball to the keeper and got out. Joseph returned to bowl out Keshav Maharaj, with three wickets falling in just 10 balls. Seales bowled Kagiso Rabada, and Joseph achieved his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket by bowling out Kyle Verreyenne.
With the team struggling at 97 for 9, Nandre Burger and Dane Piedt fought back by hitting loose balls for boundaries, adding 63 runs for the last wicket. Gudakesh Motie lost control in one over, allowing Piedt to hit a four and a six. They managed to frustrate the West Indies for 20 overs, but the resistance ended when Motie trapped Burger in front of the stumps, and South Africa finished at 160 by Tea.
West Indies: First Session
West Indies might have felt confident going into the break, but South Africa came back determined to turn things around. And they certainly did. Burger bowled an excellent delivery to knock out Mikyle Louis' off stump in the second over. Keacy Carty, who had a good debut last week, hit several boundaries to speed up the scoring. South Africa's decision to bring Mulder in early paid off as he bowled out captain Kraigg Brathwaite. Alick Athanaze was dismissed soon after when Mulder caught a reflexive catch off his bowling. Mulder then took another wicket as Hodge edged the ball to third slip, making it three wickets in as many overs.
Carty, who was playing aggressively, was the next to get out, flicking a ball to midwicket off Burger. Mulder then dismissed Joshua da Silva, leaving the hosts struggling at 56 for 6. Holder played positively against Mulder, hitting two boundaries in one over. Motie stayed at the crease while Holder occasionally hit boundaries. As the end of the day approached, Motie missed a pull shot off a short delivery from Maharaj and was given out LBW, concluding an eventful day of Test cricket.
