Delhi Capitals won an exciting IPL match in Delhi after a tense Super Over battle
IPL 2025: Starc forced the game into the super over with a brilliant defense of eight runs in the 20th over as Rajasthan finished at 188-4. Super Over: Two run-outs in Starc's super over limited Rajasthan to 11-2 before KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs win the Target for Delhi.
Rajasthan Royals (RR) needed just nine runs to win with six wickets left, but Mitchell Starc turned the game around with five perfect yorkers in the final over. Dhruv Jurel couldn't score the two runs needed on the last ball, pushing the match into a Super Over.
In the Super Over, RR struggled, losing Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal to run outs in just five balls. Delhi Capitals (DC) easily chased the 12-run target in four deliveries.
With DC needing five runs from three balls, Tristan Stubbs hit a six off Sandeep Sharma, securing DC's fifth win in six matches and taking them to the top of the points table. Stubbs had earlier played a crucial role, scoring 34 runs off 18 balls to help DC score 42 runs in the last three overs.
The Stubbs Show
At Arun Jaitley Stadium, teams batting first had consistently crossed the 200-run mark in the last eight T20s. Delhi Capitals (DC) seemed far from reaching that milestone until Tristan Stubbs and Axar Patel turned things around. Axar Patel played a key role, smashing 34 runs off just 14 balls, especially taking on Wanindu Hasaranga.
Rajasthan Royals (RR) struggled in the final moments. Sandeep Sharma, who had impressive figures of 3-0-14-0, lost control in a costly 11-ball over, delivering four wides and a no-ball. The over ended with Maheesh Theekshana dropping an easy catch, adding up to 19 runs.
RR also gave Stubbs a lifeline when Riyan Parag dropped a simple catch at long-on while he was on 12. Stubbs made them pay with crucial runs in the final overs, forcing RR to chase a bigger total than expected.
One of the most valuable moments came when Stubbs made a sharp throw from wide long-on, restricting the second-last ball to a single. With RR needing three runs off two balls, this play proved decisive.
That Drop Could Have Been Costly
Tristan Stubbs almost had a tough moment before his match-winning finish. He misjudged a catch, allowing Nitish Rana to survive on 20. Just five balls earlier, Kuldeep Yadav had dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal, making Rana’s wicket a potential game-changer for Delhi Capitals (DC).
Rana made the most of his chance, scoring 31 more runs off just 12 balls, easing the pressure on the Rajasthan Royals (RR) as they faced a tricky chase of 73 runs from 36 balls. However, Mitchell Starc stepped up with a brilliant in-swinging yorker to dismiss Rana, leaving RR needing 28 off 14 balls. Shimron Hetmyer and Dhruv Jurel then had nine runs to chase in the final over but failed to hit a boundary as Starc executed his yorkers perfectly.
Starc’s performance was a complete turnaround from his rough start. In his first over, Jaiswal dominated him, smashing a four, a six, and another four. Jaiswal aggressively attacked Starc’s full-length deliveries, sending them over the infield with sheer power. Even when Starc bowled short, Jaiswal adjusted and pulled him over deep backward square.
Jaiswal’s explosive start seemed to inspire Sanju Samson, who was striking the ball well until he suffered a suspected side strain. Samson had hit a four and a six just before attempting a cut shot off Vipraj Nigam, which led to his injury. He had to leave the field with RR at 61 without loss in 5.3 overs, disrupting their momentum.
Delhi Capitals (DC) had a shaky start, losing Jake Fraser-McGurk and Karun Nair early. Fraser-McGurk was caught at mid-off, while Nair, who had just made a strong comeback, was run out for a three-ball duck after facing two tough short balls from Jofra Archer. Before that, Abishek Porel gave DC a strong start, smashing 23 runs off Tushar Deshpande’s second over.
KL Rahul played cautiously due to the slow pitch, making stroke play difficult. He reached 17 off 18 balls but couldn’t accelerate, eventually falling for 38 off 32 balls when he pulled Archer to deep midwicket.
Porel also struggled to maintain his aggressive start and was dismissed for 49. Luckily for DC, Axar Patel provided a late boost, and Tristan Stubbs carried the momentum forward, helping DC set a competitive total. In the end, Mitchell Starc’s brilliant bowling ensured DC defended their score successfully.
