England Appoints Brendon McCullum as White-Ball Coach

England Appoints Brendon McCullum as White-Ball Coach

Former New Zealand Cricketer Brendon McCullum has been appointed as England's white-ball head coach, alongside with Red Ball.

For the men’s white-ball team England has decided to hand over their coaching command to Brendon McCullum, promoting and adding one more responsibility to his role as head coach of the Test side to White-Ball Coach. This represents a change from the split-coaching approach reintroduced by Rob Key, the Managing Director of England Men's Cricket, in 2022, after an eight-year break.
Now his contract has been extended till the end of 2027 as he will be taking charge of the white ball team from January 2025, when England will tour India and that will be followed by the ICC Champions Trophy.
Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will temporarily take over as the white-ball coach for the home series against Australia this month and the Caribbean tour in October-November.
Referring to the situation Key said that He is very happy that Brendon is appointed for both of the roles. He also added that he is incredibly blessed that a coach of his calibre is ready to fully dedicate himself to English cricket. We're excited to align all teams now and we're looking forward to facing any challenges that come our way.
For the last two years, there were regular clashes between the formats which had made the situation worse and hopefully now from January, the situation will be eased.
He will have enough time in his schedule starting from January to focus on both roles, and we believe that this change will help our players and coaching staff perform at their best.
McCullum was appointed as the white ball coach within a month after the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) made the different ways with Matthew Mott, who took up the charge in May 2022, but got out halfway through his four-year contract. In 2022 under his coaching England was able to win the T20 World Cup, but his performance can be improved in the other ICC Tournaments. England's performance in the ODI World Cup in India last year was notably poor. They finished seventh out of 10 teams and were at risk of not qualifying for the Champions Trophy at one point.
However England has played well in this Year's T20 World Cup held in the Caribbean, where they lost to India in the semifinals, their most wins were from less fancied sides, but the efforts weren’t much which is why Mott had to leave his job.
After the appointment, McCullam said that he really enjoyed his time with the test team and extending the role he is very excited about it and that he will be able to include himself in the white ball sides. He is ready to get into the new challenges and he is excited to work with Jos.
Rob Key’s vision for English cricket really impressed me. The idea of having a unified coaching structure, especially with a less busy schedule next year, made a lot of sense. I’m excited about leading both teams and thankful for the support from the ECB and my family as I take on these new responsibilities.
English cricket has a lot of talent, and I’m eager to help these players reach their full potential. I want to create an environment where everyone can do their best and where we can keep competing at the highest level in all formats.
The ECB also announced that McCullum will take a short break in New Zealand after the current Test series against Sri Lanka ends. He will be back in time for England’s tours of Pakistan in October and New Zealand in December.
