Ferguson triumphs over Papua New Guinea in T20 World Cup 2024
Lockie did not concede a single run and bowled 24 dot balls and by doing this he became the second bowler to achieve this milestone.
Lockie Ferguson (3 wickets for 0 runs) and Tim Southee (2 wickets for 11 runs) bowled well. They helped New Zealand beat PNG by 7 wickets in their last game of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Ferguson bowled 24 balls without giving away any runs, making it hard for PNG to score. PNG made only 78 runs. New Zealand won quickly in just 12.2 overs.
The Divergence – Lockie Ferguson’s Amazing Bowling
Ferguson started playing in the fifth round of the game. He took advantage of the good bowling conditions and quickly got three important players out without letting them score any points. During the middle of the game, when Papua New Guinea was trying to stabilize, his return to the game stopped their progress. He removed both the main players, which led to Papua New Guinea losing 8 wickets and scoring fewer points than expected. Lockie did not concede a single run and bowled 24 dot balls and by doing this he became the second bowler to achieve this milestone.
Papua New Guinea:
Initial Overs – 16/2 (RR: 2.67, 2x4s)
The game was postponed due to rain, but it turned out to be a boon for New Zealand. Early losses by Southee and Ferguson put Papua New Guinea (PNG) at a disadvantage, as they were only able to achieve their lowest PowerPlay score of 16/2. Tony Ura was the first to be dismissed, making a poor decision with a wild swing that sent the ball to a point where it was difficult to recover. Ferguson followed suit, taking out Assad Vala for making a risky shot that went wide and ended up in slips.
Middle Overs – 36/3 (RR: 4, 3x4s)
After bowling a great first over without giving any runs, Ferguson kept doing well. When the spin bowlers came in, Papua New Guinea (PNG) felt a bit better. Ish Sodhi, who replaced Jimmy Neesham, was quite expensive. So, Ferguson was back. He not only got rid of the two important batters who were set but also finished his bowling without letting PNG score any runs off him.
Final Overs – 26/5 (RR: 5.5, 4s/6s: 2/1)
In the game, PNG's slow progress was stopped. Boult, a player for the other team, did well when he came back to bowl in the 16th over. He knocked down the stumps of Hiri Hiri right after he tried to score a boundary. This was important for his team. It was Boult's last game in the World Cup. He completed with 2 wickets for 14 runs. He got the wicket of Norman Vanua, who tried to hit a tricky ball but ended up getting caught out instead. Sodhi, another bowler, also did well. He bowled a bit expensively in one over, giving away 11 runs. But in the last over of the game, he took out two players from the opposite team in just four balls. This helped keep PNG's score low at 78 runs.
New Zealand:
Initial Overs - 29/2 (RR: 4.83, 4/6s: 1/2)
Scoring 79 runs wasn't easy. Finn Allen got out early, trying to hit a wide ball. He edged it to the keeper. This was his second time getting out to a left-arm fast bowler in this World Cup and his 19th time in this type of game overall. Conway and Rachin Ravindra also struggled to hit the ball well at first. Conway managed to hit a big six over deep midwicket, but Ravindra tried the same shot and got out soon after. Conway hit another big shot, helping New Zealand finish the first part of the game with 29 runs for 2 wickets.
Middle Overs - 50/1 in (RR: 7.89, 4s/6s: 4/1)
Conway relentlessly advanced for most of his turn, eventually sweeping Chad Soper with a four and a six in the ninth over, pushing New Zealand over the 50-run threshold. However, he was immediately caught lbw by Semo Kamea on the next ball, despite the review not showing any clear evidence to dispute it. New Zealand faced minimal pressure from the scoreboard, giving Daryl Mitchell a brief opportunity to focus. And once he did, three boundaries from Kamea in the 12th over sealed the deal.
Score Summary:
In the match, PNG 78, batting in the 19.4 overs, were defeated by New Zealand 79/3, with Tim Southee scoring 2-11 and Lockie Ferguson contributing 3-0. The match ended with New Zealand winning by 7 wickets, with Devon Conway scoring 35 runs and Kabua Morea taking 2-4 wickets.
