Ex-South Africa pacer Morne Morkel has been named India men's team bowling coach. Morkel's first assignment as the newly-appointed bowling coach will be the two-match Test series against Bangladesh.
Ex-Pakistan Coach Morne Morkel has been appointed as the coach of the Indian Cricket Team. The news has been confirmed by the BCCI secretary Jay Shah. Morne Morkel before was the coach of the Pakistan Cricket team at the time of the ODI 2023 World Cup in India. Morne Morkel, who has previously worked with IPL teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, and Delhi Daredevils, has been appointed as the bowling coach for the senior India men's team. "Yes, Morne Morkel has been appointed bowling coach of the senior India men's team," Shah confirmed.
The First Test Match of India is going to be held on September 19 which is also the first assignment of the Morkel. The 39-year-old Morne Morkel, who was the top choice of new chief coach Gautam Gambhir due to their previous collaboration at Lucknow Super Giants, has been appointed as the bowling coach for the senior India men's team. Morkel boasts an impressive career, having played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is for South Africa, amassing a total of 544 international wickets.
The relationship between Morkel and Gambhir is great as they coach together at the time of LSG. And when Gambhir left the KKR Morkel remained the bowling coach of the LSG. Back in the 2014 mega-auction, Gautam Gambhir, who was then the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, was adamant about securing Morne Morkel's services as a player. Gambhir has previously mentioned that Morkel was the bowler he feared the most.
Indian pacer Joginder Sharma made's statement regarding the tenure of the head coach Gautam Gambhir and said because of his outspoken nature he might not stay much longer. Gautam Gambhir assumed the role of head coach of the Indian team following the conclusion of Rahul Dravid's tenure after the T20 World Cup in June. In his debut T20I series as head coach, India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, achieved a clean sweep by defeating Sri Lanka 3-0.
While Gautam Gambhir has shown a positive demeanour in the early days of his tenure, Joginder Sharma, a T20 World Cup winner alongside Gambhir in 2007, believes that the former India opener may not be able to maintain his position as head coach for an extended period.
