Four heartbreaking exits and four heartwarming wins for Indian cricket in the Super 8 stages of T20 World Cups...

Journey of Team India in the T20 World Cup ahead of Super Eight fight league matches.

A week ago, Team India made it to the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating the USA in the third Group A match at Nassau County International Stadium in New York. Before this, they had defeated Ireland and Pakistan and ended their league match on top of the points list although their match against Canada was washed out in Florida on Saturday.

India are placed in Group 1 in the Super Eight stage together with Afghanistan, Australia and Bangladesh. Sharma’s men would start their journey in the second round of the World Cup on June 20, against Afghanistan at Barbados followed by on June 22 against at Antigua, before locking horns with the 2021 champions Australia on June 24.

How was Team India's journey in the Super Eight of the T20 World Cup season?

2007 T20 World Cup: Triumphs over Pakistan and Scotland put India in the Super Eight where they were soundly beaten 10 wickets down by New Zealand in their first match. But they came back and were able to defeat South Africa and England and finish at the top of the group and qualify for the semis. The Indian cricket team under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni emerged as the champion team and it remains India’s lone ICC title triumph so far in this form of the game.

2009 T20 World Cup: India defeated Ireland and Bangladesh in group A in the initial round to qualify for the super-eight where they were at the bottom of the group after being defeated by South Africa, West Indies, and England.

2010 T20 World Cup: India worked hard in Group C by defeating South Africa and Afghanistan but then again saw one of their worst performances in Super Eight where they were washed away by Australia, Sri Lanka and West Indies.

2012 T20 World Cup: India came third in the points table of Super Eight after defeating the former world champions England and hosts Afghanistan in the league matches. While they did come back strongly to beat Pakistan and South Africa after their nine-wicket humiliation against Australia, again they lost the opportunity to make the semis due to a poor Net Run Rate compared to their dreaded rivals who finished second to the Aussies.

2014, 2016, 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cup: When 16 teams qualified for the ICC tournament in 2014 the second stage of the contest was given the name of Super 10 and included eight full members on the ICC T20I rankings and two more teams from the round one of the contest. This was the scenario for all the later versions of the World Cup up to version 2024.

India posted an unbeaten record in the Super 10 Group 2 in 2014 with wins over WI, PAK, Aus and Ban. The Dhoni-led side reached the finals after defeating South Africa in the finals but lost to Sri Lanka. Two years later, India reached the Super 10 stage but placed second in the group stage and lost in a close match to the hosts and winners of the tournament, West Indies in the semifinal.
