Gambhir steps into the role after Dravid, who was in charge from November 2021 to June 2024. Dravid left the position after India's triumphant T20 World Cup victory in the USA and West Indies.
Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, revealed on Tuesday (July 9th) that Gautam Gambhir has been named the head coach of the senior India Men's team. This role marks Gambhir's initial position, and he will lead the team on a tour of Sri Lanka, which includes three One Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals, starting on July 27.
Gambhir steps into the role after Dravid, who was in charge from November 2021 to June 2024. Dravid left the position after India's triumphant T20 World Cup victory in the USA and West Indies. During Dravid's tenure, India made it to the final of the ICC World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup in 2023 and emerged as champions in the T20 World Cup in 2024.
"As the head coach of the Indian squad, Gambhir will oversee the development of the team and its performance during matches," the BCCI announced. To accomplish this, he aims to cultivate a team culture characterized by excellence, discipline, and collaboration. Moreover, he intends to develop new talent and prepare his team to tackle future obstacles overseas.
Gautam Gambhir, who is a newcomer to coaching but has guided various IPL franchises as a consultant is now the Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. He represented India in the World Cup-winning sides back in both 2007 and 2011. He represented his country in 58 Test, 147 One Day Internationals (ODI), and 37 Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) in his career that spanned from 2004 to 2016.
"His clear strategy for Team India, along with his extensive background, makes him an excellent fit for this prestigious coaching position. The BCCI is fully behind him as he starts this new chapter."
Shah posted on X, saying, "I am extremely happy to announce Mr. Gautam Gambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team." "Gautam has seen firsthand how quickly the game of cricket has changed in the modern era. I do not doubt that Gautam is the best person to lead Indian cricket forward because he has persevered through hardship and succeeded in a variety of roles throughout his career.
“India is me and to serve my country has indeed been the greatest honor of my life’ I am happy to be back in a different capacity but the purpose remains the same- To make every Indian proud The Indian cricket team belongs to 1. 4 billion aspirations and I will leave no stone unturned to fulfill these aspirations” Gambhir added.
To sum up, Dravid was helpful and effective as the coach of Team India. Shah said thank you to him, saying that under his leadership the team was becoming very strong and they managed to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The leadership exhibited by Dravid was excellent and he had some very good tactics to counter the opposition.
The BCCI President Roger Binny also extended an appreciation to Dravid and expressed a warm welcome to the new coach, Gautam Gambhir. Binny is confident that Gambhir’s experience and vision will ensure Team India continues excelling and remains a pride to the nation.
