Harmanpreet and bowlers crush Sri Lanka to give India a significant boost in net run rate
India 172 for 3 (Harmanpreet 52*, Mandhana 50, Shafali 43, Athapaththu 1-34) beat Sri Lanka 90 (Dilhari 21, Sanjeewani 20, Reddy 3-19, Asha 3-19) by 82 runs.
In Dubai to be qualified for the Semi-final India has played an A-One to totally destroy Sri Lanka in this T20 World Cup 2024. For that, they have shown their best batting skills, which might be the best ones in this tournament so far and played well with the bat and ball to take them out of the Asia Cup championship packing from the tournament.
They took the batting first and put on the half-centuries with the partnership of Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur at 173-3 which was also the highest in the T20 World Cup. After that they did not out Bang; Adesh was at 90 and won by 82 runs. India had a big win in the T20 World Cups, with Arundhati Reddy and Asha Sobhana each taking three wickets. As a result, their net run rate (NRR) improved to 0.576, which is better than Pakistan's and second only to Australia's. This is significant because their NRR had suffered after their 58-run loss to New Zealand in their first match.
Shafali and Mandhana Gives us a Recall
India batted second in both their matches against Pakistan and New Zealand before Wednesday. Harmanpreet won her first toss, allowing India to bat first. Sri Lanka used spinners, making it tough for Shafali Verma and Mandhana to score freely. Shafali hit India's first four in the third over and repeated it in the fourth and fifth. At that point, Shafali was on 24 off 20, while Mandhana was on 6 off 10. Unlike the previous game, Mandhana wasn't being impatient or trying too hard.
Mandhana started strong by hitting a shot over the left-arm spinner Sugandika Kumari's head, and then she hit another six over wide long-on off left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera. India consistently scored at least one four in each over from the third to the ninth. Chamari Athapaththu kept India guessing by having her bowlers bowl one-over spells until the 13th over. By then, Mandhana had surpassed Shafali to reach her fourth T20 World Cup half-century.
Harmanpreet says hello from No. 3
India's strong opening partnership of 98 runs was ended by a run-out, which was their third-highest in T20 World Cups. Harmanpreet Kaur, who batted at No. 4 against Pakistan, came in at No. 3 and was soon joined by Jemimah Rodrigues. Rodrigues used the sweep shot effectively and contributed to the team's momentum. Harmanpreet played aggressively and scored a quick half-century, helping India take 46 runs off the last four overs, the most by any team in this T20 World Cup.
Harmanpreet gets a neck injury which is why she has to be out from the match against Pakistan and just come for a toss with a neck path. But she wasn’t able to chase the field and that is why Mandhana was captaining the team.
Sri Lanka slide in the chase
Getting into the T20 World Cup Sri Lanka has secured many wins since April last year and their ratio of winning was better than India and Australia. As to winning the Maiden Asia Cup title, they hunted down 166 runs, it would be too early to judge them in the chase of 173 runs in Dubai.
Radha Yadav who substituted Harmanpreet Kaur on the second ball of the chase fixed up the tone. She went back to her right from the backward point and dived a full length to catch a ball hit by Vishmi Ganaratne. Mandhana gave the new ball to Shreyanka Patil instead of Deepti Sharma. Patil bowled a quicker delivery that spun away, tempting Athapaththu into making a defensive poke, resulting in an edge to slip. Then, Renuka Singh dismissed Harshitha Samarawickrama in the third over, almost ending Sri Lanka's challenge.
In the middle overs Legspinner Asha has joined and picks up three wickets by using the sharp spin that is used to undo the batters. Asha's most important wicket was Anushka Sanjeewani, who was batting aggressively and had a good partnership with Dilhari. Asha deceived the Sri Lankan wicketkeeper by changing the length of the ball, and Richa Ghosh stumped her. Both Asha and Reddy bowled well in the middle overs, taking 3 wickets each for 19 runs. Reddy did well after a tough first over where she gave away 12 runs. Sri Lanka finished with a low score for the third game in a row in this competition.
