Harmanpreet's Decision to Conclude India's Number 3 Conundrum at T20 World Cup
Harmanpreet's Decision to Conclude India's Number 3 Conundrum at T20 World Cup
Harmanpreet will also be looked at to solve India's sixth-bowling option.
The mystery of who will be India's No. 3 has been solved. According to Amol Muzumdar, the head coach, the decision has been made to have Harmanpreet Kaur in that position. Muzumdar mentioned that this decision was made during the pre-World Cup camps in India and was reinforced during the warm-up matches.
She said that, in this position, there are several occupants that can be considered, it was made out of necessity as until April Yastika Bhatia was seen to be in front in this race, but unfortunately, she got injured at the time of the Bangladesh tour.
However, Yastika has now returned from her Knee injury and the part of the squad she needs to wait for her opportunity. In both India’s battle warm-ups, she battled at Number 3 position with out of the score of 10 and 1.
The decision seems to be aimed at helping Harmanpreet make the most of her power game once she's settled. When batting at number four or five, she has struggled to keep up, as shown by her strike rate of 94.09 in 84 T20 innings since 2022.
After Muzumdar assumed the role, four other players were allowed to prove themselves. Dayalan Hemalatha's tenure was the lengthiest, spanning seven games, during which she only managed to score 139 runs, with 41 of those coming in a single innings. Sajeevan Sajana and Uma Chetry also had brief stints in the team.
Muzumdar could have asked Jemimah Rodrigues to step in if needed, but her skill in playing against spin makes her important at No. 4 or 5 in the batting order. The idea is that Rodrigues, who is a skilled player, can more easily find spaces in the field when the fielders are spread out.
The numbers are based on a small sample size, but Rodrigues has a better strike rate of 143.81 in 10 innings at No. 5, compared to 110.19 in 59 innings at No. 3. Nevertheless, Rodrigues herself is aiming to improve her ability to score quickly from the very beginning of her innings as the next step in her development as a T20 batter.
WPL Gives Direction to find the right Players
Muzumdar praised India's team and emphasized the importance of developing backup players. For example, Sajana was sent on the 'A' tour to Australia to further her development.
He mentioned that it has been a combined effort from the Indian team, NCA, and the coaches who went on the India A tour to Australia. They have been working together, providing feedback and formalizing strategies to strengthen the bench. They have seen positive results from these efforts.
Muzumdar also credited the Women's T20 Challenge (WPL) for producing talented players for the Indian squad at the World Cup. He emphasized that while domestic cricketers are crucial, the WPL has also played a significant role in identifying and nurturing talent.
