Harry Brook scores his first ODI century to keep the series hopes alive

Harry Brook scores his first ODI century to keep the series hopes alive

Brook and Jacks add 156 for third wicket partnership to put England in front on DLS before rain

England’s stand-in captain, Harry Brook, scored an unbeaten 110 runs, his first century in this format, leading his team to victory and keeping the five-match series alive. Brook’s performance, along with Will Jacks’ 84 runs from 82 balls, set England on the path to chase Australia’s 304/7. Rain interrupted the game, and with no more play possible, England won by 46 runs using the DLS method. This win ended Australia’s 14-game winning streak in ODIs, which started after their loss to South Africa in last year’s World Cup in India. It also broke England’s seven-game losing streak against Australia in this format.
The match felt familiar as Alex Carey once again played a key role in helping Australia reach a strong total. They performed better than in the second ODI, where even 270 runs were enough to increase their series lead. On Monday in Chester-le-Street, Carey’s unbeaten 77, along with Steve Smith’s solid half-century and contributions from Cameron Green (42 off 49) and Aaron Hardie (44 off 26), set Australia up to win the series.
They took a big step in that direction when the similarity to the last game extended to the start of the England innings as they lost openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett early - to Mitchell Starc - and fell to 11/2. But Jacks and Brook combined to flip the script with a match-defining 156-run standoff with 147 deliveries. With gloomy overheads, big square boundaries and seamer-friendly conditions were expected to side with Australia and their five-pronged attack but Jacks and Brook swiftly established their authority over the match situation by picking boundaries at easy even after the PowerPlay. By the end, they had hit 22 fours and three sixes between them.
With Adam Zampa not playing, Mitchell Marsh's spin options were Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Short - the latter going for 12 runs in the only over he bowled where Brook brought up his fifty. Jacks's fifty came up in the following over off Starc, who was back in the attack after his four-over burst early on to try and break this blossoming stand. Jacks and Brook caused further headaches for Marsh by taking on his star bowler for three fours in a 19-run over. Starc looked elsewhere for a breakthrough but in vain as the England pair brought their side up to speed at 151/2 in 25 overs.
In the 28th over, Green delivered a short ball that Jacks top-edged to Sean Abbott at short-third man, ending his impressive innings of 89 runs off 82 balls, which included 9 fours and a six. Green then added to England’s worries by quickly dismissing Jamie Smith. However, Liam Livingstone came in and played a brisk, unbeaten 33 off 20 balls, pushing England ahead of the required run rate. During a 57-run unbeaten partnership, Brook reached his maiden ODI century. This duo made rapid progress, even taking on Starc again, and by the time rain halted play, they were 46 runs ahead of the par score at 254/4 in 37.4 overs. Brook scored 110 off 94 balls, hitting 13 fours and two sixes.
There was a brief moment when it seemed play might resume after the initial showers, but this hope was dashed as rain returned, ultimately bringing the game to an early end.
