ICC Champions Trophy: Shami's five-fer, Gill’s unbeaten ton leads India win over Bangladesh
India Vs Bangladesh: Shubman Gill’s Century Helps India Win
Shubman Gill scored his 8th ODI century (101*)with the help of 9 fours and 2 sixes.
Bangladesh batted first and was initially struggling against India's strong bowling attack. However, a brilliant century by Towhid Hridoy helped them recover and post a total of 228 all out. Mohammed Shami was the standout bowler for India, taking a five-wicket haul.
India chased down the target comfortably, despite losing a few wickets in the middle overs. Shubman Gill played a crucial role with a solid half-century, and contributions from other batsmen ensured India reached the target.
Meanwhile, Towhid Hridoy's first One Day International century and Mohammed Shami's five-wicket haul were the highlights of the first half of the Bangladesh-India Champions Trophy match in Dubai. India started strong in the powerplay, reducing Bangladesh to 35/5 before Hridoy and Jaker Ali built a fighting total for their team.
Bangladesh struggled from the start after choosing to bat. In the first over, Shami dismissed Soumya Sarkar with an inside edge. Harshit Rana, playing instead of Arshdeep Singh, took a wicket in his first over when Najmul Hossain hit the ball straight to Virat Kohli. Bangladesh was in deep trouble at 2/2 after just two overs.
Tanzim Hasan tried to counter-attack, hitting consecutive boundaries off Shami and adding another in his next over. However, Shami took Mehidy Hasan's wicket, setting Bangladesh back further.
Things got worse for Bangladesh in the ninth over when Axar Patel came into the attack. He bowled a delivery angled across Tanzim Hasan, who edged it to the keeper. The next ball caught the edge of Mushfiqur Rahim's bat. Though Axar missed a hat-trick when Rohit Sharma dropped Jaker Ali, this allowed Jaker and Hridoy to lead Bangladesh's recovery.
Bangladesh could have been 35/6, but Jaker and Hridoy put together a crucial 154-run partnership. They were patient and batted through the overs. Hridoy also got a reprieve when Hardik Pandya dropped him at mid-off. Despite reintroducing Shami and Rana to break the partnership, India couldn't stop the duo. After the drinks break, Jaker reached his fifty off 87 balls and Hridoy reached his century off 84 balls.
The run rate picked up when Hridoy hit a few boundaries, including a six off Kuldeep Yadav, and another six off Ravindra Jadeja in the 40th over, pushing Bangladesh's run rate past 4. Both batters started accelerating, causing concern for the Indian bowlers. Shami eventually broke the stand, taking his 200th ODI wicket, the fastest to reach this milestone.
Rishad Hossain played a vital cameo, hitting 4,6,6 against Axar Patel, pushing Bangladesh past 200 runs. However, with wickets falling quickly again and Hridoy suffering from cramps, Bangladesh's late surge fizzled out. Shami completed his five-wicket haul, and Bangladesh were bowled out for 228 shortly after Hridoy's century.
India's chase started carefully against a disciplined Bangladesh bowling attack. Shubman Gill, known for his stylish batting, began steadily, finding the gaps in the field. Captain Rohit Sharma played a cautious role initially, respecting the new ball. Together, they built a solid opening partnership of 65 runs, setting a strong base for the chase. Gill's cover drives were especially impressive, and Rohit signalled his intent with his signature pull shot.
As the partnership was looking strong, Rohit Sharma got out, edging a delivery from Taskin Ahmed to the wicketkeeper. The crowd went silent, with Indian and Bangladeshi supporters feeling the tension. Virat Kohli then entered the field to a loud cheer, with the pressure on him and Gill to rebuild the innings.
Gill and Kohli started to play well. Gill, gaining confidence, displayed his range of shots with perfect timing, sending the ball to the boundary. Kohli remained focused, rotating the strike and hitting boundaries with his wristy flicks. Together, they added 80 crucial runs, bringing India closer to their target. Commentators praised Gill's maturity and Kohli's experience.
Shubman Gill reached his century with a glorious boundary, a testament to his talent and hard work. The crowd erupted, acknowledging the young batsman's achievement. It was a classy hundred, filled with exquisite strokes and controlled aggression. He had played a pivotal role in India's chase.
While Gill was the aggressor, Kohli played a more measured innings, anchoring the chase and ensuring there were no further hiccups. He played the situation perfectly, rotating the strike and occasionally dispatching the loose deliveries to the boundary. His presence at the crease was a calming influence on the team.
After Gill got out, the middle order stepped up with some valuable runs. Suryakumar Yadav played a quick and exciting innings, hitting a few sixes and adding momentum to the chase. Hardik Pandya also contributed with a fast 30, ensuring India comfortably reached the target.
