India and Sri Lanka Play to a Thrilling Tie in ODI Match
India levelled the score with Sri Lanka at 230 but couldn't get target in the 1st ODI of the series at Colombo.
The first ODI in the 3-match series ended in a tie. India matched Sri Lanka’s first innings score of 230. Charith Asalanka bowled brilliantly, taking the wickets of Shivam Dube and Arshdeep Singh in consecutive deliveries, with India needing just 1 run from 14 balls.
Dunith Wellalage’s crucial 67 runs helped Sri Lanka reach 230/8 against India at the R Premadasa Stadium on Friday. For India, Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh each took 2 wickets. Pathum Nissanka was the second-highest scorer for Sri Lanka with 56 runs.
Earlier, Sri Lanka's captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and chose to bat. Despite opener Pathum Nissanka scoring a fifty, India's bowlers disrupted the top-order, reducing Sri Lanka to 101/5. However, 21-year-old Dunith Wellalage scored his best ODI total, helping Sri Lanka reach a competitive score.
Sri Lanka:
Initial overs (1 to 15)
In the early stages of the match, Siraj and Arshdeep Singh made significant impacts with the ball. Siraj struck early, dismissing Avishka Fernando for just 1 run in the second over, caught by Arshdeep Singh. Siraj then troubled Nissanka with some sharp deliveries, including a peach that beat the inside edge and a short ball that Nissanka cut for four. Despite Siraj's efforts, Nissanka managed to find some rhythm, hitting a boundary and picking up singles.
Arshdeep Singh also made a mark with tight bowling. He had Nissanka in trouble but was eventually punished for over-pitching, which allowed Nissanka to pick up boundaries. However, Arshdeep did manage to get a crucial single off **Kusal Mendis**, who struggled initially but eventually found some form.
As the overs progressed, Axar Patel and Shivam Dube took over the bowling duties. Axar Patel was economical, providing a steady stream of dot balls and limiting the scoring, though Nissanka managed to score a couple of boundaries and singles off his bowling. Shivam Dube made a breakthrough by dismissing Kusal Mendis for 14, caught LBW, and later took the wicket of Samarawickrama as well.
Throughout the period from 0.1 to 15 overs, Sri Lanka faced a challenging start with the Indian bowlers maintaining tight lines and making crucial breakthroughs, setting up a competitive situation with wickets falling at crucial junctures.
Middle Over (15 to 30)
In the 16th over, Axar Patel continued to apply pressure, with his delivery to Samarawickrama being driven to the left of the bowler and then to cover without scoring. Nissanka managed a single cut through cover, but was otherwise restrained by Axar, who then had Samarawickrama caught by Shubman Gill at short cover after an early shot.
Kuldeep Yadav took over in the 17th over, with Nissanka narrowly avoiding a catch at short midwicket and missing a wrong 'un. Axar returned in the 18th over, successfully containing Nissanka who could only manage a single to backward square leg.
Asalanka, newly arrived, made a quick adjustment, sweeping for a single and nudging into the leg-side. Kuldeep’s 19th over saw him limit Asalanka to a single and Nissanka to a defensive push and a single, showcasing his control with a mix of flighted and quicker deliveries.
In the 20th over, Washington Sundar’s accurate spin led to Asalanka facing several testing deliveries. Despite a close lbw call and a streaky boundary, Sundar’s full ball managed to spin past the outside edge and trap Nissanka leg-before, ending his innings after a fighting 56. Sundar’s over also saw Asalanka getting a couple of boundaries and a single.
Kuldeep Yadav continued his fine spell in the 21st over, keeping Asalanka and Liyanage cautious with sharp turning deliveries. Liyanage got off the mark with a single, and Kuldeep's in-drifters and wrong 'uns kept the pressure on the new batsmen.
Washington Sundar’s 22nd over featured a mix of deliveries, with Nissanka adding a single to backward square leg and scoring boundaries through a well-placed sweep. Sundar continued to challenge Asalanka, who was unable to score freely.
Kuldeep Yadav was back for the 23rd over, dismissing Asalanka with a catch to Rohit Sharma at slip. Yadav's deliveries kept Liyanage and Asalanka on their toes, with Liyanage scoring a single and Asalanka managing a couple of runs before his departure.
Sundar’s 24th over saw Liyanage and Wellalage managing singles and defensive shots, with Wellalage getting off the mark with a boundary through extra cover.
Kuldeep Yadav continued in the 27th over, bowling a series of deliveries to Liyanage and Wellalage, with Liyanage scoring a single and Wellalage facing accurate spin.
In the 28th over, Washington Sundar’s over featured a mix of deliveries with Wellalage top-edging a slog sweep for three runs and later hitting a boundary. Sundar kept probing with his variations, but Wellalage managed to get some runs.
Kuldeep Yadav’s 29th over continued to be effective, with Liyanage and Wellalage struggling to find scoring opportunities. Kuldeep’s deliveries included a googly that beat Wellalage's outside edge and ensured tight control.
In the 30th over, Washington Sundar's spell concluded with Liyanage and Wellalage managing a few singles, with Sundar’s deliveries being expertly played by Liyanage.
Death Over ( 30 t0 40)
Shubman Gill's over began with Wellalage hitting a short ball for a boundary. Liyanage then got a single and later hit a six with a pull shot. Wellalage added another single, and Liyanage drove for another single.
In Washington Sundar's over, Liyanage and Wellalage kept rotating the strike, with Wellalage hitting a reverse sweep for four. Liyanage was then caught off Axar Patel's bowling, breaking their partnership. Siraj bowled a tight over, including a maiden, and Liyanage flicked one to the boundary.
Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav kept the pressure on. Hasaranga hit a six and a boundary, though Kuldeep had a dropped catch. Axar's over saw singles and a close run-out attempt, while Hasaranga hit another boundary and a six in Kuldeep's over. In the final overs, Hasaranga and Wellalage continued to score runs with well-placed shots, despite tight bowling and a missed run-out chance.
India:
Initial Overs ( 1 To 15)
India’s game changed dramatically due to some key moments. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill started strong, making a solid partnership of over 50 runs. Rohit was especially aggressive, hitting boundaries and a huge six off Mohamed Shiraz. Gill also played well with some stylish shots, showing his skill and calmness.
However, the momentum shifted with the introduction of Sri Lankan spinners Wellalage and Dananjaya. Wellalage struck first and dismissed Gill with a well-placed delivery that was top-edged to Kusal Mendis. This breakthrough marked the beginning of a dramatic collapse for India.
Rohit Sharma continued his fight against Sri Lanka, but his innings came to a sudden end when Wellalage gave him out lbw. Despite a brief discussion with Kohli about a review, Rohit chose not to contest the decision. His departure for a brisk 58 left India in a precarious position.
India's situation got worse when Washington Sundar was given out lbw to Dananjaya. Sundar, who had come in with the hope of fixing the innings, decided to review the decision. The review confirmed the lbw call, with ball-tracking showing it was clipping the leg stump. India’s review did not overturn the decision, and Sundar’s wicket pushed them further into trouble.
With India slipping from 75/0 to 87/3, these overs proved challenging. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer took to the crease, attempting to rebuild the innings amidst the mounting pressure from Sri Lanka’s bowlers. Kohli, famous for his toughness, faced the spin bowling of Dananjaya and Wellalage with determination. However, the pressure was definitely increasing.
Throughout these crucial phases, Sri Lankan bowlers effectively took advantage of the conditions and applied relentless pressure on the Indian batsmen. The fall of key wickets, including those of two of India’s top-order batsmen, significantly altered the dynamics of the game, leaving India with the task of stabilizing their innings and setting a competitive total.
In summary, the sequence of events—Rohit Sharma’s aggressive knock, Shubman Gill’s dismissal, and the crucial wickets of Washington Sundar and Rohit Sharma—highlighted the turning points in the match, demonstrating how quickly fortunes can change in cricket.
Middle overs (15-30 overs)
During the innings, Wellalage and Hasaranga were key in keeping the pressure on the Indian batters, with Wellalage taking key overs and Hasaranga maintaining control with his leg spin. The match remained finely poised as the Indian batsmen, including Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, tried to chase down the target amidst tight bowling and critical wickets.
Hasaranga’s bowling continued to challenge the Indian batsmen, and on the other hand, Kohli and Shreyas Iyer are trying well to rebuild the innings. Kohli managed to get off the mark with a single and hit a boundary, but Hasaranga’s tight control and variations in length made scoring difficult. Kohli eventually faced an LBW decision against Hasaranga, which was confirmed by a review, resulting in his wicket after scoring only 24 runs.
Asitha Fernando made an impact in the 24th over by dismissing Shreyas Iyer which is quite a big achievement for them Fernando bowled a short of a good length delivery that moved in, and Iyer was caught out and bowled, hitting the top of the off-stump. This crucial wicket left India needing 99 runs to win. Fernando continued to apply pressure with tight bowling, keeping Axar Patel and Rahul under check.
In the previous over, Dananjaya managed a maiden over against Axar Patel. He started by delivering a tight ball which Axar defended to mid-off. Axar struggled with Dananjaya’s bounce and pace, failing to time a cut shot effectively and being beaten by a delivery that spun away from his outside edge.
Well, Asalanka continued to test the Indian batters with his off-spin. In the 30th over, Asalanka's delivery to Rahul was a slow, spinning ball into the pad, which Rahul nurded backward of square leg for a single. Rahul then faced a short and turning delivery from Asalanka that dropped near his feet after hitting his pad. Despite the challenging delivery, Rahul pushed a tossed-up ball back to Asalanka. Axar Patel, who joined Rahul, drove a flighted delivery to long-off for a single. An LBW appeal against Axar was reviewed by Sri Lanka; however, the review revealed that the ball hit Axar's pad first and was impacting outside off-stump, leading to Sri Lanka losing a review. Rahul later worked a turning delivery from Asalanka to deep mid-wicket for a single.
Death overs (31-40)
In the 31st over, Dananjaya put in a challenging performance, with a dropped catch off a thick edge from Rahul and a couple of well-bowled deliveries, including a spinning leg-break that beat Rahul’s outside edge. Axar Patel managed a single off a googly. The 32nd over saw Asalanka bowling a tight line. He delivered a few dot balls to Axar Patel, with one wide due to a slide down leg. Axar managed a single with a push off the outer half of the bat.
In the 33rd over, Mohamed Shiraz focused on accuracy. He bowled a good length delivery to Axar, who managed a couple of singles and dabs. Rahul also managed a single after driving firmly to mid-off. Asalanka continued his effective skills in the 34th over, with Rahul managing just two runs off a reverse sweep that found the gap due to a misjudged move by the slip fielder. Axar Patel added a single.
The 35th over by Mohamed Shiraz saw both Axar and Rahul scoring singles and a couple of runs. Shiraz maintained a consistent pace and length, preventing significant scoring opportunities. In the 36th over, Asalanka continued to apply pressure. Axar managed a boundary off a tossed-up delivery, relieving some pressure, but otherwise, Asalanka’s bowling kept the batsmen in check with singles and dot balls. Hasaranga bowled the 37th over, with a mix of deliveries that included a boundary off a half-tracker from Rahul. Both Axar and Rahul managed a few singles, but Hasaranga’s variations kept them contained.
The 38th over saw Wellalage maintaining a tight line. He restricted runs with accurate deliveries to both Axar and Rahul, who managed only singles and a dot ball. In the 39th over, Hasaranga struck a significant blow by dismissing Rahul for 31 runs. Rahul attempted a slog sweep but got a top edge, caught by Wellalage. Hasaranga also allowed a six from Axar Patel and a leg bye, with Shivam Dube coming to the crease. Finally, in the 40th over, Asalanka delivered a key over by dismissing Axar Patel. Axar edged a sharply spinning delivery, caught by Kusal Mendis, ending his innings at 33. Kuldeep Yadav came in but did not score off Asalanka’s accurate bowling.
