India register their second biggest Test win by runs outside Asia
India came by an impressive comeback, winning a Test match against Australia by 295 runs at Optus Stadium. And this victory is gonna gave a great impact on the ongoing battle for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The match was pretty much decided by the fourth day, even though Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh tried to score quickly. India officially won just after tea when Harshit Rana got Alex Carey out, taking the lead in the five-match series.
It was a memorable day and a great performance given by India, and all thanks go to the efforts of the stand-in captain, Jasprit Bumrah. He contributed eight wickets throughout the match. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave a century in the second innings of India to severely weaken a declining Australia.
India was seen as unlikely to succeed after losing all three of their home matches to New Zealand. They started the first game of the series without having played any official matches during their tour, and they were missing their captain Rohit Sharma and injured player Shubman Gill.
In all of this pressure, Gambhir makes sure to make the right moves and the perfect selection calls, that includes of Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin is not included in the team which also proves right.
Bumrah must get the credit for stimulating a new look of the team as, from the first day itself he played an important role in getting India into the match because after winning the toss the team was wrapped up at 150 runs.
Australia is likely to face criticism after their disappointing performance in their first Test since the New Zealand tour in March. Concerns will be raised about the limited preparation of several players.
The team's struggling top-order will be in focus, especially No. 3 Marnus Labuschagne, who managed just 5 runs in the match, continuing his long struggle for form.
After starting strong on the first day, Australia's bowling performance faded during India's second innings. Captain Pat Cummins had an unusually poor match, having not played a red-ball game since March as he focused on preparing for the series with three 50-over matches. He ended up with disappointing match figures of 3 wickets for 153 runs in 40.4 overs.
Australia seemed confused by the changing conditions of the pitch, which was lively on the first day but became mostly flat for most of the second and third days. Cracks seem to be wide because of which up and down bounces have been created which makes batting difficult on day four.
They started at 12 for 3, now on day three after a bad beginning in the darkness, Australia has to face the attacks by India as they wish to finish off all things quickly.
After getting out without scoring in the first innings, Steven Smith returned to his favorite No. 4 spot and faced his rival Bumrah. On the first ball of the day, Bumrah made a strong appeal for lbw, but it turned out to be a no-ball, which took the excitement out of the moment.
Smith felt relieved when he scored his first run on the fourth ball with a classic shot through the covers. However, Australia's troubles returned in the next over when opener Usman Khawaja was out after top-edging a short delivery from quick bowler Mohammed Siraj, getting caught by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant as he ran back.
After facing some lbw issues recently, Smith made some changes to his technique, and his movement before the ball was not as noticeable as it had been in the first innings when Bumrah had him out lbw. Smith still had a tough time and took a painful hit in the ribs from debutant bowler Rana, leaving him in pain on the ground.
Despite the pain, he kept batting and worked well with Head, who took an aggressive approach and countered the bowlers, helping them achieve Australia's first half-century partnership in the match.
India put pressure on Smith by having Bumrah set up fielders on the leg side, making it harder for him to score. His resistance lasted 60 balls until he nicked a great delivery from the energetic Siraj, which caught the edge of his bat.
Marsh faced a tough return to bowling, where he struggled to find his rhythm on day three, with his slower seamers being hit around by India's batsmen. However, he hoped to finish the match strong at home.
Before lunch, he had a rough time but managed to hang in there despite taking a few hits on the gloves. Marsh and Head, who had limited preparation due to paternity leave, began to make batting seem much easier after the break during the most favourable time for scoring.
Head charged towards a century, attacking any loose balls and scoring freely through the offside, while Marsh also hit some powerful shots during their quick partnership.
But Bumrah made a comeback and bowled a fantastic delivery that caught Head’s edge right when he was on 89, leading to excited celebrations from Kohli.
Marsh also fell short of a milestone when he was out for 47, edging a delivery by debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy, who took his first Test wicket.
Mitchell Starc was caught sharply at short leg, giving Washington Sundar his first wicket of the match. Soon after, India wrapped up a victory that they will cherish, putting more pressure on the Australian team.
Brief Score:
India 150 (Hazlewood 4-29) and 487 for 6 dec (Jaiswal 161, Kohli 100*, Rahul 77) beat Australia 104 (Bumrah 5-30) and 238 (Head 89, Bumrah 3-42, Siraj 3-51) by 295 runs
