India loses Rohit and Rahul early after Australia scores 474

Kohli departs at 36 after 100 run partnership with Yashswi Yashasvi Jaiswal. Both Batters in the pavilion in quick sessions.

Indian team captain Rohit Sharma is now showing coming on the top as a short-lived player as he was dismissed in just the second over when the target was 474 runs. KL Rahul came to the crease early and seemed ready to help India reach the Tea break alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal until he faced an unplayable delivery from Pat Cummins just before the break.
After a busy morning session where Australia ended on 454/7, they quickly lost two wickets. Mitchell Starc was the first to go after lunch, bowled out by Ravindra Jadeja for playing a poor shot. Moments later, India got lucky with Steve Smith’s wicket. He had just scored a century and tried to hit a big shot off Akash Deep, but the ball hit his leg and knocked off one bail while he looked on in surprise.
The final partnership between Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon lasted for eight overs, during which Boland successfully reviewed two LBW appeals. Jasprit Bumrah eventually ended the innings by taking the wicket of Lyon in his 29th over—only the third time he has bowled that many in a single innings. Unfortunately for Indian captain Rohit Sharma, his struggles in the BGT 2024-25 continued with this match.
Rohit got out in the second over while trying to pull a ball that wasn't short enough, resulting in a leading edge that went to Boland at mid-on. KL Rahul came in early and seemed at ease alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, who also settled down after some early jitters. Just before the end of the session, Cummins delivered a ball that straightened out and hit Rahul's off-stump. As a result, India went into the break at 51/2, giving up more momentum to the home team.
The advantage at MCG started in the morning session when Steve Smith scored his 34th Test century - his 11th against India. He had a small struggle with Bumrah in the first hour but then went on to dominate all of India’s bowlers. India was careless in the field and ineffective with the ball, giving away runs quickly. Pat Cummins also got in on the action, making a quick 49 before getting out to Jadeja. Mitchell Starc batted with Smith as the centurion played some aggressive shots. Australia only added 20 runs in the second session, but India is already feeling the pressure after losing two early wickets.
