India's Top Order Struggles Put Team in Trouble
Australia picked up four of India's top order despite on a stop-start day.
Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazelwood caused deep trouble for India on the third morning at Brisbane after Australia made their total of 445 runs. India struggled at 22 for 3 as the session was interrupted by the frequent rain, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli and Shubhman Gill all are out making single-digit runs only.
Rain delays postponed the start of India’s innings, but Starc made an immediate impact, removing Jaiswal with his second ball. Jaiswal flicked a full delivery straight to the fielder near the square leg. Soon after, Mitchell Marsh pulled off an excellent catch at gully to dismiss Gill, who lost his balance attempting a drive off another delivery from Starc.
Kohli faces some tough times at the time of his short stay at the crease. He did miss a drive and was rushed for the short ball. He was able to play only for the 16 balls and ended in a familiar way, as he chased a wide delivery from Hazlewood and edged it to the wicketkeeper. More rain stopped play, leaving India in a difficult position, with a big challenge ahead to save the Test despite the time lost due to the weather.
Earlier, Australia added 40 runs to their overnight score of 405 in just over an hour before India wrapped up the innings. A brief rain delay pushed back the start, but Alex Carey brought up his fifty off 53 balls with a well-timed sweep for four against Ravindra Jadeja. Starc hit a six and a four before edging Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed his sixth wicket of the innings. With this dismissal, Bumrah reached 50 Test wickets in Australia, a milestone previously achieved by only Kapil Dev for India.
In the next 10 overs, slowed by another short rain delay, Australia added just 22 runs, aiming for a strong first-innings total. India spread their field to contain Carey and managed Bumrah’s workload, giving him a break after a short spell. Mohammed Siraj eventually bowled Nathan Lyon with a full delivery, and Akash Deep took his first wicket by dismissing Carey for 70 with a short ball, ending Australia’s innings after 29.5 overs of hard work from India’s bowlers.
Brief scores:
India 51/4 (Mitchell Starc 2-25) trail Australia 445 (Travis Head 152, Steve Smith 101, Alex Carey 70; Jasprit Bumrah 6-76) by 394 runs.
