IPL 2025: Mitchell, Shardul and Pooran shine in LSG’s five-wicket win over SRH
Shardul and Pooran magnificent performace LSG beat SRH by 5 wickets
Shardul Thakur’s four-wicket haul and a power-hitting class from Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh set up a five-wicket win for Lucknow Super Giants over Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The match took an unexpected turn as many of the cricket fans thought that this time Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) would give their 300-plus total in the IPL, but they scored 190/9 only. And the reasons behind all the expectations was that in their previous match, they have posted 286 for 6 in Hyderabad, and along with that, Lucknow Super Giants were out of their two first-choice bowlers.
SRH was their low this time, as they were not able to score even 200, 300 is still a big deal. They only posted 190 for 9 where Shradul Thakur picked up 4 for 34, which is also his best figures of IPL.
Even though 190 runs is a good score, Nicholas Pooran made it seem small. He scored 70 runs off just 26 balls, hitting six fours and six sixes. By the time Pat Cummins got him out LBW, LSG only needed 71 runs from 68 balls.
Mitchell Marsh, who supported Pooran during their partnership, also scored a fifty, while Abdul Samad finished the game strongly.
LSG chased down their target with 23 balls left and five wickets in hand, giving SRH a taste of their own medicine. Last season, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma had chased down LSG's score of 165 in just 9.4 overs at the same venue.
LSG knew they had to take early wickets to stop the strong SRH batting line-up. Thakur looked for swing in his first over but didn’t succeed. However, in his next over, he took down Abhishek and Ishan Kishan in consecutive balls. Abhishek pulled a short ball straight into the hands of a fielder at deep square-leg, and Kishan was caught down the leg side.
Head started aggressively against Avesh Khan, hitting him for two sixes and a four in the fourth over. Two overs later, he tried to attack Ravi Bishnoi but mistimed a slog sweep, sending the ball high in the air. Pooran dropped the catch at long-on, and shortly after, Bishnoi missed a tough chance off his own bowling. Head, who was on 35 during the first drop, only added 12 more runs before Prince Yadav bowled him out for his first IPL wicket.
Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen pushed SRH past 100 runs in the 11th over. Klaasen was then run out in a strange way—Nitish hit a full toss back towards the bowler, Prince, who failed to catch it. However, the ball bounced off Prince and hit the stumps, catching Klaasen out of his crease. Soon after, Bishnoi bowled Nitish for 32 off 28 balls, putting SRH under pressure.
True to their style, SRH batters kept attacking, hitting plenty of sixes but losing wickets in the process. Aniket Verma smashed back-to-back sixes against Bishnoi and Digvesh Rathi in consecutive overs but was dismissed after a quick 36 off 13 balls. Pat Cummins came in at No. 8, hit three sixes in his first three balls, and got out on the fourth. SRH ended with 180 for 8 after 18 overs, but could only add 10 runs in the last two overs.
Mohammed Shami dismissed Aiden Markram in the second over, but Nicholas Pooran quickly turned the game around. His first boundary came from a misfield, and then he hit Simarjeet Singh for two massive sixes in a row over deep midwicket.
Knowing Pooran's dominance against left-arm orthodox spinners, Cummins brought on Abhishek Sharma. But the gamble backfired as Pooran slog-swept both balls he faced from Abhishek for sixes, making it seven sixes off nine balls against him in T20 cricket. Pooran also attacked leg-spinner Adam Zampa, smashing two sixes and a four in the seventh over. From his first 20 balls, Pooran scored five fours and six sixes.
Mitchell Marsh continued the momentum after Pooran was dismissed. He was on 37 off 22 balls and had already hit Shami for two sixes during the powerplay. In the 11th over, he struck Cummins for two consecutive fours to reach his fifty in just 29 balls. However, Cummins got his revenge soon after, dismissing Marsh at long-on.
Despite losing Rishabh Pant and Ayush Badoni, LSG cruised to victory. They only needed 53 runs from the last 9 overs. Abdul Samad, a former SRH player, played a quick cameo, scoring an unbeaten 22 off 8 balls to seal the win.
