Cricket Ireland has also confirmed an exciting international calendar for 2025, featuring high-profile tours from West Indies, England, Zimbabwe Women, and Pakistan Women.
Ireland has decided not to host a multi-format series against Afghanistan this year due to financial challenges. The summer schedule is packed, featuring historic visits from England Men's T20I team and Zimbabwe Women.
Cricket Ireland announced their international matches on Tuesday. These include Women's 50-over World Cup Qualifier games against Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Scotland, scheduled from April 9-18. Ireland Women will also play warm-up matches against West Indies and Bangladesh on April 5 and 7 in Pakistan, ahead of their attempt to qualify for the tournament for the first time since 2005. However, the ICC has not yet confirmed the dates and venues for the qualifiers.
Ireland Men are set to play ODI and T20I series against West Indies in May and June. Later, in September, England Men will visit Ireland for their first T20I series there, consisting of three matches.
Ireland was supposed to play a Test match, three ODIs, and three T20Is against Afghanistan, but these games have been cancelled. Unlike Australia and England, who also avoided playing Afghanistan for political reasons, Cricket Ireland's chief executive, Warren Deutrom, said the decision was purely due to financial issues. He explained that budget constraints and the need to manage resources across different goals were the main reasons.
Since becoming a Full Member of the ICC in 2017, Ireland has only hosted two of their 10 Test matches. They earned their first Test win against Afghanistan in 2024 in the UAE and later secured two more victories against Zimbabwe, one at home last year and another away recently.
Last year, Ireland played a "home" series against South Africa in Abu Dhabi because they don't have a permanent stadium yet, and temporary setups are expensive. However, the Irish Government has approved the construction of a permanent cricket stadium in Dublin, set to be completed by 2028. This stadium will help Ireland prepare to co-host the 2030 T20 World Cup with England and Scotland.
