Jaker and Mominul Rescue Bangladesh from Following-On Embarrassment
Mikyle Louis scored 97 to push West Indies ahead against Bangladesh
Mominul Haque and Jaker Ali both scored fifties, helping Bangladesh avoid the follow-on on Day 3 of the Antigua Test. However, West Indies kept control of the match and reduced Bangladesh to 269 for 9 by the end of the day.
Starting the day at 40 for 2, the Bangladeshi batters got some starts, but none managed to score big due to the pressure from the West Indies bowlers. Kemar Roach struck early, taking the wicket of Shahadat Hossain for 18 and putting Bangladesh at 66 for 3. Mominul, who was at the crease overnight, then teamed up with Litton Das to put up some resistance.
They both scored 62 runs for the fourth wicket, however, the pitch was still working well for the batting, Litton helped Bangladesh reach over 100 runs with a boundary through covers in the last over before Lunch. The visitors managed to defend against the eager West Indies bowlers for the rest of the morning session, showing signs of a comeback thanks to their experienced players.
Things fell apart quickly after the break. Jayden Seales came back to bowl and struck right away by getting Mominul out LBW on 50 runs. The experienced Bangladesh player had just reached his half-century off 115 balls in the last over, and he even wasted a team review on what was a clear out.
The Josephs started to create some chances, even using a review on Mehidy Hasan Miraz's situation, until Shamar Joseph finally got rewarded. The fast bowler bowled Litton out, stopping him from getting a fifty by just 10 runs after a solid innings that had helped Bangladesh recover from a tough start.
Jaker came onto the field and helped his team reach Tea without losing more wickets, finishing at 165 for 5. However, after the break, Mehidy didn't last long as Alzarri Joseph took a wicket with a short ball. Jaker then teamed up with Taijul Islam, and together they scored 68 runs for the seventh wicket, which was Bangladesh's best partnership of the day.
They took Bangladesh over the 200-run mark just after the second new ball was introduced. But as Taijul started hitting more boundaries, Alzarri came back and got him out for 25. Meanwhile, Justin Greaves got Jaker out shortly after he scored his half-century. Despite their efforts, Bangladesh managed to avoid the embarrassment of a follow-on, but Greaves picked up his second wicket at the end of play by getting Hasan Mahmud caught in the slips, leaving Bangladesh still 181 runs behind with only one wicket remaining.
