Jasprit Bumrah awarded with the Sir Garfield Sobers award for the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year 2024

Jasprit Bumrah and Amelia Kerr named ICC Cricketers of the Year 2024

Jasprit Bumrah became the fifth Indian to win the ICC Cricketer of the Year award.

Jasprit Bumrah India’s pace spearhead has received the award of Sir Garfield Sobers Award for the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year 2024. Whereas New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr has been rewarded with her first Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy for the same. Jasprit has competition with Joe Root, Travis Head and Harry Brook but he did well and received this award after Virat Kohli who got that in 2017, 2018. Meanwhile with this Kerr is the first person from her country to win this important award after she helped New Zealand achieve their first T20I World Cup victory in Dubai last October.
Bumrah had an outstanding 2024, excelling in both Tests and T20Is and playing a key role in India's victory in the T20 World Cup. He took 15 wickets at an impressive average of 8.26 and maintained a low economy rate of 4.17, earning him the Player of the Tournament award at the 2024 T20 World Cup. His performances were very important throughout the tournament, especially in the group match against Pakistan and in the crucial final against South Africa.
Whereas Kerr scored a total of 387 runs and took 29 wickets at an average of 15.55 in T20Is (Twenty20 Internationals) in 2024. In a standout performance in the UAE, she was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament after a decisive all-round performance of 43 runs and 3 wickets for 24 runs in the World Cup final against South Africa. She also topped the tournament's bowling charts with 15 wickets, averaging just 7.33 runs per wicket, and contributing 135 runs across six innings.
She scored 264 runs and took 14 wickets in 50-over cricket in 2024, with four-wicket performances against India and Australia. She won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year, surpassing competitors Laura Wolvaardt, Chamari Athapaththu, and Annabel Sutherland. Kerr expressed her gratitude and emphasized her focus on contributing to her team's success.
On the other hand, In 2024, Bumrah shines in Tests, taking 71 wickets—19 more than the next-best bowler—and becoming the second-best Indian pacer in a year after Kapil Dev. He topped the player rankings and surpassed 900 points, setting a new record for Indian bowlers. He also passed 200 wickets with an unmatched bowling average and was named ICC Test Player of the Year.
Bumrah's success began in T20Is before dominating Tests, notably in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where he took 32 wickets in five Tests, keeping India competitive despite losing the series 1-3.

Azmatullah Omarzai from Afghanistan has been awarded the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year, and Sri Lankan all-rounder Kamindu Mendis has been honoured as the ICC Emerging Men's Cricketer of the Year. India's Arshdeep Singh was awarded the title of Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year.

South African all-rounder Annerie Dercksen won the ICC Emerging Women's Cricketer of the Year award, and UAE's Esha Oza was named ICC Women's Associate Cricketer of the Year for the second time. Oza scored an impressive 711 runs over the year, with only Mandhana and Athapaththu surpassing this tally.
