Jayasuriya’s Heroic Nine Secures Sri Lanka’s Win Despite Ravindra’s Valiant Effort
New Zealand batter fell for 92 just eight balls into the final morning, before Jayasuriya bagged five in the second innings.
Sri Lanka quickly finished the match on the last morning in Galle, taking only 15 minutes to get the last two New Zealand wickets and win by 63 runs in the first Test. This victory puts Sri Lanka ahead 1-0 in the two-match series and moves them up to third place in the World Test Championship points table, ahead of New Zealand.
Prabath Jayasuriya’s performance was indeed remarkable! His consistency, especially in Galle, is impressive. With eight five-wicket hauls and seven of them at Galle, he seems to have a special connection with that ground. His match figures of 9 for 204 are a testament to his skill and determination.
After battling valiantly the previous day, Rachin Ravindra was dismissed just eight balls into the first session of the final morning. Jayasuriya, bowling an arm ball, trapped him in front for 92 runs off 168 deliveries. Coming around the wicket, Jayasuriya delivered a ball on leg stump, and Ravindra, caught in the crease, played down the wrong line. He opted for a review, but with the ball confirmed to be pitching in line, his fate was sealed.
Any hopes of a comeback were quickly ended when Will O’Rourke was bowled out by Jayasuriya, who took his fifth wicket. O’Rourke had a good game, taking eight wickets, the second-highest in the match, equal to Ajaz Patel.
This result keeps Sri Lanka’s slim chances of reaching the WTC final alive. For New Zealand, it makes things harder with the upcoming series against India and England. Both teams have only a two-day break before the second Test starts on Thursday in Galle.
