Kanpur Outfield Receives 'Unsatisfactory' Rating and Demerit Point

The Green Park Stadium in Kanpur earned a demerit point from the ICC after no play was possible on days two and three of the Test match. However, India still managed to win the game on the final day.

The outfield at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, where the rain-affected second Test between India and Bangladesh took place from September 27 to October 1, received an "unsatisfactory" rating from the ICC. This rating also includes one demerit point for the stadium.
On one of the test matches, the field was available for 35 overs only, and no match was possible on days two and three even though there was no rain on day three of the scheduled playing hours. Before the Test match, the Public Works Department of the state said that one of the stands at Green Park was unsafe. They told the stadium officials to only let a few spectators into the upper-level seats.
The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) uses Green Park Stadium based on an agreement with the UP government. The government owns the land, but the UPCA is responsible for maintaining the stadium according to the agreement.
Meanwhile, the vice president of the BCCI Rajiv Shukla who belongs to Kanpur has defended the ground as it was facing a lot of criticism After day three of the match was completely rained out, it was acknowledged that the ground, which has been used for Test matches since 1952, needs some repairs.
Despite more than two and a half days being washed out, India worked hard to win the match. They took all 20 Bangladesh wickets in 121.2 overs and scored 383 runs in just 52 overs across two innings, averaging an impressive 7.36 runs per over.
Meanwhile, the pitch for that match receives satisfactory ratings.
The ICC ratings for the pitches and outfields for all the international games depend on the scale of very good to unfit: which consists of very good, satisfactory, unsatisfactory and unfit. One demerit point is for the unsatisfactory rating and those who got three for the unfit. If any playground gets five or more demerit points in a five-year rolling period, If a cricket ground gets five or more demerit points within five years, it cannot host any international cricket matches for a year.
The other places that hosted India's international matches in the 2024-25 season did not face any criticism from the ICC. Out of the five Tests India played, four pitches, including those in Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai from the recent series against New Zealand, received "satisfactory" ratings. The pitch at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium, which held the first Test against Bangladesh, was rated as "very good."
