Kerala Leads on Attritional Day All Thanks to Sachin Baby’s Half-Century
Sachin and Azharuddeen's solid batting against Gujarat, Kerala reached 321 for 5.
On an attritional day, the Kerala team made some progress in Ahmedabad, all because of Sachin Baby’s half-century. Kerala's strategy might come from their recent batting struggles in the first innings, especially in the quarter-final against Jammu & Kashmir. They were down to 200 for 9 but managed to score 81 runs for the last wicket, which gave them a crucial lead.
Rohan Kunnummal and Akshay Chandran have been able to make 60 runs in 20.4 overs who by the way were the openers Before Kerala collapsed to 3 for 26 in just 45 minutes, Chandran was run out for 30. Kunnummal also fell for 30, trapped lbw by a Ravi Bishnoi delivery that beat his inside edge.
Kerala replaced Shoun Roger with Varun Nayanar at No. 3. Nayanar managed to hold off the bowlers for almost an hour to score 10 runs but was eventually caught behind by seamer Priyajitsing Jadeja. Jadeja had previously taken four wickets to trouble Saurashtra in the quarter-final's second innings.
In the post-lunch session, Jalaj Saxena and Baby focused on survival rather than scoring runs, adding 71 runs in 27.5 overs. Saxena, who made a determined 30 runs, was eventually bowled by left-arm seamer Arzan Nagwaswalla, who penetrated his defence.
Baby, who had reached his first half-century since the Ranji Trophy resumed for the second leg, continued to play cautiously with Mohammed Azharuddeen. The duo managed to play through the last hour without losing any more wickets.
Gujarat won't be too unhappy with their performance on a day when the pitch offered little help to both fast bowlers and spinners. Bishnoi was the standout bowler, delivering 15 overs and taking 1 for 33. His faster deliveries often made the batters uncertain with their footwork.
The rest of the bowlers, particularly the fast ones, were mostly accurate but lacked the pace to challenge the batters effectively.
