Kraigg Brathwaite steps down as the captain of the West Indies Test team

Kraigg Brathwaite steps down as the captain of the West Indies Test team

Kraigg Brathwaite has stepped down as skipper of the West Indies Test team after four years in charge. Meanwhile, Shai Hope, the current ODI captain, has been entrusted with the T20I captaincy.

Kraigg Brathwaite has resigned from the post of West Indies Test captain as the home season is coming soon, and on the other hand, Shai Hope has been replaced by Rovman Powell as the role of T20I captain and will take over the responsibilities of ODI captain. And as per the Cricket West Indies, the new captain will be named in the upcoming weeks.
"Kraigg Brathwaite has officially stepped down as the Test captain. He first let the CWI leadership know about his decision earlier this year, before the West Indies' successful tour of Pakistan ended," the board stated. "Brathwaite wanted to make sure there was enough time for a smooth transition after his departure.
"Because of this, he has resigned before the home series against Australia, giving the new leadership time to settle in. This upcoming series will be especially meaningful for Brathwaite, who is just two games away from his 100th Test match, allowing him to focus on his batting without the extra pressure of captaincy."
Brathwaite has captained the team for the last 39 tests, starting from 2017 to 2025, in which the team has lost 10 matches and won the other 22. Kraigg Brathwaite officially became captain in 2021, and during his time, some key moments include winning the Gabba Test in Australia in January 2024, drawing a series 1-1 in Pakistan in 2025, and winning a home series against England 1-0 in 2022.
"Kraigg Brathwaite has been a great leader for our Test team, guiding the players with discipline, strength, and a good understanding of the game," said Miles Bascombe, the Director of Cricket at CWI. "His contributions have been important, and with his leadership, we have experienced historic moments that will be remembered for a long time. We thank Kraigg for his time as captain and look forward to his continued influence as a senior player."
Hope appointed on Sammy's advice
Bascombe stated that the choice to make Hope the T20I captain was made "after consulting with head coach Daren Sammy," and that Powell "handled the decision with professionalism and dignity." Powell had been the captain of the West Indies' T20I team since May 2023, leading them to home series victories against India, England, and South Africa.
"I have told him [Powell] that he should feel proud of his contributions to West Indies cricket, as he has played a key role in raising our T20 team to new heights," Bascombe said. "His leadership has built a strong foundation, and we appreciate his efforts."
Sammy mentioned that Hope's appointment "represents a positive change for West Indies cricket, considering his success with the 50-over team over the past 18 months."
"As the team continues to grow, Hope combines quick decision-making with careful analysis, using detailed match data and player performance insights to guide strategy," Sammy explained. "Shai believes strongly in team play, and his careful preparation, along with his calm and steady approach under pressure, make him the right leader for this time."
