Matthew Wade Steps Down from International Cricket
The wicketkeeper-batter will continue to play BBL and other franchise T20 tournaments.
The Australian Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has retired from international cricket and now he is going to join the coaching staff of the national Men’s team, and it was announced by the Cricket Australia on Tuesday.
He started his international journey in 2011 October and has completed 36 test matches, 97 ODIs and 92 T20Is by playing his last game in June 2024 at the T20 World Cup.
Wade said about retirement that: he totally that his international days are going to be end by the last T20 World Cup. I've been talking with George Bailey and Andrew McDonald about my retirement from international play and my coaching plans for the past six months.
"Coaching has been on my mind for a few years, and I’m thankful for some great opportunities that have come my way. I’m really excited about them.
"I’ll keep playing in the BBL and some franchise leagues during the summer, but I’m also focusing a lot on my coaching alongside those commitments.
"As I wrap up my international career, I want to thank all my teammates, staff, and coaches in Australia. It’s been a challenging but rewarding journey at the international level, and I couldn’t have achieved all that I did without the support of good people around me."
He said that he also wanted to thank his family, his mother, father and sisters for the countless hours that they have spent in providing the right training.
Lastly, he thanks his wife and kids, he said his thanks are not enough for them, as they encourage him daily to pursue his dream. He said he can't find the right words to show how thankful I am to them; nothing would have happened without their help."
He will be part of Australia's coaching team for the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, working under Andre Borovec. He will also stay with the team for the ODI Series starting in Melbourne next week. However, he will still play domestic cricket for Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League for at least the next two summers.
Cricket Australia CEO, Nick Hockley congratulates him on his wonderful journey of an international career in which he has learnt different skills and versatility that made him an outstanding player.
"I'm really happy that he will help coach the next generation of stars while also keeping the excitement going in the Big Bash with the Hobart Hurricanes."
