Mumbai Indians win a close match to end Delhi Capitals unbeaten run
IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians registered their second win of the tournament, beating Delhi Capitals by 12 runs.
Mumbai Indians (MI) pulled off an exciting win that seemed unlikely, especially after an incredible performance by Karun Nair, who scored 89 runs off just 40 balls while chasing 206. However, Karn Sharma, coming off the bench, changed the game with three key wickets, leading to a series of run outs in the second-to-last over, which left Delhi Capitals (DC) 12 runs short.
This result means there are no unbeaten teams left at IPL 2025. DC will regret losing those two points, ending their streak of four straight wins, as their return to the Arun Jaitley Stadium ended in unexpected disappointment.
For MI, this victory was only their second in six matches, but it gives new life to a season that was starting to go off course.
Nair's return
After seven years since his last IPL half-century and three years away from the tournament, Nair took charge in DC's chase following Jake Fraser-McGurk's first-ball out.
Having a fantastic run in the domestic season, Nair attacked Jasprit Bumrah in the powerplay, scoring 28 runs off just nine balls, with three fours and two sixes, giving DC a strong start against MI.
Nair was impressive with his skill and ability to see the ball well, hitting Bumrah with ease and taking some bold shots by positioning himself to hit over deep extra cover for two sixes. He quickly adapted to the spin bowlers, picking up lengths to sweep and even reverse-sweep at times.
After reaching his half-century in just 22 balls, he looked ready to score big, but a stunning delivery from Mitchell Santner changed that. Expecting the ball to slide through, Nair played for a straight delivery but ended up getting deceived as the ball turned sharply and hit the top of his off stump.
Just five balls later, when Axar Patel was caught out trying to hit a leading edge, Bumrah finally got his first wicket of the season. At that point, MI sensed a glimmer of hope as DC was at 145 for 4 by the end of the 13th over.
Mumbai Indians (MI) took full advantage of the new IPL rule that allows teams to change the ball after 11 overs in the second innings to counter dew. Right after switching balls, MI struck big—Tristan Stubbs and KL Rahul fell, triggering a collapse for Delhi Capitals (DC).
Despite needing 42 runs off 24 balls, DC still had hope with Ashutosh Sharma and Vipraj Nigam, who had pulled off a comeback in a previous match. However, Trent Boult’s tight bowling and Santner’s spin magic made it tough. Santner dismissed Nigam, taking advantage of the drier ball's grip and turn.
The match ended dramatically with a hat-trick of run-outs in the 19th over—Ashutosh, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohit Sharma were all dismissed, sealing MI’s victory.
In MI’s batting innings, Tilak Varma shined, scoring 59 off 43 balls, and Naman Dhir played a fiery cameo (38 off 17). Their partnership recovered MI after setbacks in the middle overs, helping the team reach 205 runs.
Though DC’s spin duo Kuldeep Yadav and Nigam took four wickets, MI’s late acceleration proved crucial. Those extra runs made all the difference, giving MI the edge in the end.
