Mitchell Hay’s unbeaten 99 New Zealand secures the series win against Sears
New Zealand defeated Pakistan by 84 runs in the second ODI here at Seddon Park on Wednesday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
New Zealand secured a dominant 84-run victory over Pakistan, sealing the series 2-0. Mitchell Hay played a brilliant innings, scoring an unbeaten 99, while New Zealand's fast bowlers completely dismantled Pakistan’s batting lineup.
Pakistan started well in the first innings, with spinner Sufiyan Muqeem putting pressure on the New Zealand batters. His tight bowling kept Pakistan in the game, but their fast bowlers struggled to maintain control in the later stages. Hay’s explosive hitting in the final overs pushed New Zealand to a strong total of 292.
Chasing 293 to stay in the series, Pakistan had a terrible start, losing half their batters within the first 12 overs for just 32 runs. Despite some resistance from a few players, New Zealand’s bowlers remained dominant and never let Pakistan recover. In the end, Pakistan fell far short of the target, handing New Zealand a comfortable win.
New Zealand dominated Pakistan once again, winning convincingly with their fast bowlers leading the charge. Will O'Rourke and Jacob Duffy were sharp and accurate, making quick work of Pakistan's top order. Pakistan lost their first three wickets cheaply, with Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq also falling early. The trend continued as Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha departed without making an impact, leaving Pakistan struggling at 9 for 3 within the Powerplay.
From there, it was mostly damage control for Pakistan. Faheem Ashraf fought hard, scoring a solid half-century, but the team continued to lose wickets regularly. Haris Rauf suffered a nasty blow to the helmet and had to leave the field due to a concussion, and Akif Javed followed soon after. Naseem Shah, who replaced Rauf, showed impressive resilience with the bat, playing freely and reaching his highest-ever ODI score of 43. His partnership with Ashraf helped Pakistan save some pride, but New Zealand’s bowlers remained in control.
Naseem entertained with a few aggressive strokes, even reaching a surprise half-century. However, his dismissal soon followed, confirming New Zealand’s win—one they had effectively sealed much earlier in the match. Pakistan never truly recovered from their early batting collapse, while New Zealand continued their dominant performance in the series.
