Nissanka and Bowlers Lead Sri Lanka to Best Position

Pathum Nissanka 53* smashed his second fifty of the game to give Sri Lanka the advantage in chase.

Pathum Nissanka's impressive innings of 53* off 44 deliveries helped give Sri Lanka the upper hand in their pursuit of 219 runs against England at The Oval on the third day. Nissanka consistently found the boundary during England's 15 overs, showcasing a mix of elegant strokes and fortunate edges. Meanwhile, his partner Dimuth Karunaratne played a more restrained innings but unfortunately was dismissed after inside-edging an inswinger onto his pad, with the ball miscuing back to Chris Woakes, who completed a fantastic diving catch.
If England were hoping that the breakthrough would lead to more success, they were surprised when Kusal Mendis matched Nissanka's performance in a fast partnership. The two players showed good intent and skill, but England's inexperienced attack, apart from Woakes, struggled to match them. The game could have continued until 7:30 pm local time (midnight IST), but due to fading light, England was instructed not to bowl seam with 45 minutes remaining. This forced Ollie Pope and the team to stop playing for the day.
In the first part of the match, Sri Lanka quickly took the last two wickets, leaving them with a target of 219 to win. The tourists put on a great bowling performance, led by Lahiru Kumara (4-21) and Vishwa Fernando (3-40). They bowled out England for just 34 overs despite England's aggressive play. Jamie Smith's 67 runs from 50 balls saved England from complete embarrassment when they were struggling at 82/7.
Day three of a Test match is usually very important, and today was no different. Sri Lanka started the day 114 runs behind England's score and ended needing 125 more to win. Things didn't start well for Sri Lanka as two of their batters got out early, and they ended up conceding a significant lead. However, apart from that, it was a good day for them.

End of Day's Play
Day 1 : England 1st innings 221/3 (Ollie Pope 103*, Harry Brook 8*)
Day 2 : Sri Lanka 1st innings 211/5 (Dhananjaya de Silva 64*, Kamindu Mendis 54*)
Day 3 : Sri Lanka 2nd innings 94/1 (Pathum Nissanka 53*, Kusal Mendis 30*)
