Nissanka’s Century Leads Sri Lanka to Historic Victory
An unbeaten century from opener Pathum Nissanka gave Sri Lanka a famous win at the Oval. Chase down a target with eight wickets in hand.
Pathum Nissanka made a great century that made Sri Lanka win the match as they were able to fulfil the target with eight wickets in hand at the oval. Even though Sri Lanka had already won the entire series, this comfort win was important for the opposition as they hadn't won a Test match against England in 10 years.
Heading into the fourth day, Sri Lanka was in a strong position after their bowlers dismissed England for just 156 in their second innings. Nissanka and Kusal Mendis then strengthened Sri Lanka's advantage with an aggressive start before the end of the third day.
On the fourth morning, Mendis continued the momentum with a boundary through mid-off in the first over. Chris Woakes, bowling from the other end, found Nissanka's edge, but the ball fell short of the slip fielder.
For a moment, it seemed like Sri Lanka might abandon its aggressive approach from the previous evening. However, when Gus Atkinson bowled a short delivery, Mendis immediately went after it, only for Shoaib Bashir at long leg to make a spectacular diving catch.
After Nissanka hit a boundary off Woakes, England made changes to their bowlers to try and get another wicket. Nissanka and Mathews kept taking singles, even some risky ones before Nissanka hit another boundary off Josh Hull. After an hour, Bashir came into the attack, but Nissanka and Mathews hit him for boundaries right away.
Once they settled in, Sri Lanka started scoring runs more easily. Nissanka reached his century and then hit Olly Stone for two sixes in a row. Nissanka also hit the winning runs and was named player of the match, having already scored a quick fifty in the first innings.
