Nortje and Ngidi named in South Africa's Champions Trophy squad

Both South Africa's fast bowlers missed the whole international home season matches with injuries.

South Africa has included Fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi in their 15-member list of the Champion Trophy which has been announced by the Cricket South Africa (CSA) during a press release on Monday. It's been a while since both of them have been included in any squad because of their long injury layoffs. Along with them, all-rounders Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj have been returning to the ODI as they missed the other that was against Pakistan.
Since the Men’s T20 Men’s World Cup Nortje has been out from the team as he played his last match in June where he also achieved the title of highest wicket-taker in the tournament of Nine matches. He is not been able to present at the 3-0 ODI series defeat to Pakistan the previous month because of a fractured toe. Meanwhile, Ngidi has not played any match since South Africa’s home summary because of his groin injury in November.
On the other hand, Gerald Coetzee who has been suffering from a Groin injury hasn’t played since  ICC Men's World Cup in 2023 in India and is still not fully recovered. And left-arm spinner Maharaj has returned to the ODI squad as he missed the face-off against Pakistan series because of an adductor strain. Some of the known all-rounders such as Andile Phehlukwayo, Corbin Bosch and left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin are out of the squad.
The opening game that is going to be against Afghanistan will be played on 21 February in Karachi.
The squad consisted of 10 members that were available at the World Cup in India where they were also able to reach the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Head Coach Rob Walter is really happy that they would be able to retain their core players from the squad. And he is hoping that their team could reach one more step as they have recently reached the latter stages in their last two ICC tournaments.
Walter said that they have managed well to maintain the squad of their core group from the 2023 World Cup, along with the fresh talent. Their performance at the ICC showed that they are capable of reaching the latter stages. And they are excited about their next step.
He added that This squad is a great source of experience, as many players have performed great in high-pressure situations. And they really could use this type of experience.
