Nortje out of Champions Trophy due to Back Injury
Anrich Nortje was initially named in the South African squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Cricket South Africa is Coetzee a replacement for Nortje. He will miss the remainder of the SA20 season as well.
Ahead of the Champions trophy a massive shock to South Africa as due to back injury Nortje has been ruled out. Since the T20 World Cup Nortje hasn’t been played any international game and while returning for the white-ball series that was against Pakistan he broke his toe in the nets. He wasn’t able to play the SA20 franchise, Pretoria Capitals along with the South Africa’s marquee T20 tournament and for now South Africa really needs a replacement for the Champions trophy.
Gerald Coetzee, who has been return after the groin injury for the Joburg Super Kings in the Durban Test that was against Sri Lanka last November might be the replacement. White ball coach Rob Walter, who is the main selectors of the team, briefed that the selection was mainly between the Nortje and Coetzee he chooses Nortje because of his experience. He thought that he will declared fit for the match. "He’s very professional. He takes good care of himself and stays in shape. I trust him and believe he'll be ready. He said.
And after 48 hours South Africa’s cricket press release said that Nortje go through some of the scans on Monday and not be able to recover for the 50-over tournament.
In the last six ICC events this is his third time that he has been ruled out for the match because of injury and all these are the ODI tournament. Due to a thumb injury, he missed playing in the 2019 World Cup. Then, he couldn't play in the 2023 World Cup because of a suspected lower back stress fracture, and now, he's out of the 2025 Champions Trophy. He played in the T20 World Cups in 2021, 2022, and 2024 but opted out of a national contract to manage his workload. He hasn't played ODIs since September 2023, and Tests since March 2023.
In a challenging summer for South Africa's fast bowlers, Nortje's injury is one of the worst. While Coetzee and Lungi Ngidi both had groin injuries, and Wiaan Mulder had a broken finger, they've all returned to play. Unfortunately, Nandre Burger, with a lower back stress fracture, and Lizaad Williams, with a knee injury, are out for the rest of the season.
