Prasidh, Abhimanyu, and Padikkal available for Vijay Hazare Trophy knockout matches
BGT squad members will play for their respective domestic teams in the upcoming knockout round of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Devdutt Padikkal, Prasidh Krishna, and Abhimanyu Easwaran will play for their teams in the knockout stage of the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting January 9 in Vadodara. KL Rahul has asked for a break, while Washington Sundar might join the Tamil Nadu team from the semi-finals if they make it that far.
Padikkal and Prasidh will leave Sydney with most of the Indian team on Wednesday. However, Abhimanyu was allowed to leave a day earlier. The Cricket Association of Bengal booked him on an earlier flight through Singapore and Ahmedabad so he could join the Bengal team in Vadodara.
Abhimanyu will train with the Bengal squad on Wednesday ahead of their pre-quarterfinal match against Haryana. Akash Deep, another Bengal player, will miss the game due to a back injury that also kept him out of the final Test in Australia. Instead, he will head to the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru (formerly the National Cricket Academy).
Prasidh and Padikkal are expected to join the Karnataka team by January 10 for their quarter-final match against Baroda on January 11. Padikkal was originally part of the India A squad but joined the Test squad after Rohit Sharma arrived late due to the birth of his child. Padikkal played in the first Test in Perth, where India won by 295 runs, but did not play in the remaining Tests.
Prasidh played in the final Test in Sydney, his first Test in a year, and took six wickets, including Steven Smith’s wicket in both innings. Both Padikkal and Prasidh had performed well in the India A matches before the Test series.
For Abhimanyu, the game against Haryana will be his first in two months. He was part of the Indian Test squad in Australia but did not play any games. Despite being considered a backup opener, his low scores of 7, 12, 0, and 17 for India A hurt his chances of debuting in the Test series.
Before the India A tour, Abhimanyu had been in excellent form, scoring four centuries in four matches during the Duleep Trophy and Ranji Trophy.
After India’s 3-1 Test series loss in Australia, which meant losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in ten years, head coach Gautam Gambhir stressed the importance of Test players participating in domestic cricket.
"I believe everyone should play domestic cricket," Gambhir said. "Domestic cricket is very important. If players are available and committed to red-ball cricket, they should play. It’s that simple. If domestic cricket is ignored, we won’t get the players we need."
