Rahul Dravid discusses coaching multiple captains as an Indian head coach
A new thought during Dravid's coaching period was workload management, but it was not given equal importance as it is being given now. This situation was not there before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During that time, there were few cases of injuries, so I probably had to work with at most 5-6 captains within the first 8-10 months of my stay here. It was, for sure, something which I hadn’t planned,” Dravid stated.
Rahul Dravid, thus, ceased to be the head coach of the Indian cricket team after the T20 World Cup in 2024. He could have spent more time, though the captain of the Indian team Rohit Sharma urged him to leave. Three years later, Dravid decided it was time to stop. In March 2020, after winning and losing some games, Dravid's team lost to England in the T20 World Cup. Then, in June 2023, they lost to Australia in the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup.
A new thought during Dravid's coaching period was workload management, but it was not given equal importance as it is being given now. This situation was not there before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Senior players usually took many breaks and while it did not affect the team greatly, it made scheduling tricky.
Dravid further added, “There was a lot of traveling when we were trying to manage the players in all the three formats of the game, we did have a few injuries, and I had to work with 5-6 different captains in the first 8-10 calls I had here and none of those were part of my understanding of the job profile.”
The ex-cricketer said he hadn't seen something like that before and talked about his experience with different captains when he started. He prefers things to stay the same because changing too much causes problems and doesn't create a good atmosphere.
"I like things to stay the same and not change too much because it makes everything unstable and doesn't create a good environment. I believe in being part of a team that creates a safe, professional environment where people are challenged but not afraid to fail. That's always been my goal," he added.
At this moment the Indore-based coach is all set to take time off from coaching. He may decide to go back and coach again during the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament. But till this day, no cricket team has sought his services for coaching them.
