Rain causes cancellation of the England-Australia T20I decider
The T20I series between Australia and England finishes 1-1
The weather forecast for Manchester was accurate, as constant rain from early morning led to the cancellation of the deciding T20I shortly after 4 pm on a gloomy Sunday. As a result, England and Australia ended up sharing the series. Australia had won convincingly in Southampton, while England made a strong comeback with a successful chase in Cardiff.
It was anticipated that both the teams would be again inviting the fast bowlers for this game: Jofra Archer and Josh Hazlewood were rested for the Cardiff match, leaving Australia with only 11 available players due to Mitchell Marsh's illness. However, the weather conditions prevented the teams from even naming their playing XIs.
For Australia, this marked the end of a series of six T20Is that started in Scotland, where they won 3-0. Marsh was happy with the chances given to younger players, as both Jake Fraser-McGurk and Cooper Connolly made their debuts.
"It would have been great to finish with a deciding match today, but I think both teams played some excellent cricket throughout. Now, we move on to the one-day series," he said. "We began in Scotland as a T20 group, knowing that young players would get opportunities. We gave different roles to players in all five games, and it's been very satisfying."
England captain Phil Salt was very happy with his team's response after their initial loss in Southampton. Liam Livingstone and Jacob Bethell formed a match-winning partnership in the second game.
"I'm very proud," he said. "When you lose the first match, there's always pressure. I told the team that when we're pushed back, we need to come back stronger, and that's exactly what we did with Livi and Beth's partnership in Cardiff. I'm really pleased with our response, but it's disappointing we couldn't play today."
The attention now shifts to the five-match ODI series, starting on Thursday in Nottingham, with a much better weather forecast. England has appointed Harry Brook as captain, replacing the injured Jos Buttler. Australia will have Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Starc available for the 50-over games.
Both teams are also preparing for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next February. Over the five games in 11 days, they will likely try out various options.
