Rain Forces a Draw in Brisbane Test Between India and Australia
Border Gavaskar Trophy: India-Australia Test ends with draw at Gabba.
Australia and India will head into the Boxing Day Test with the series tied after the third Test in Brisbane ended in a draw, with bad weather limiting play on the final day to just 24.1 overs. The decision was taken suddenly after the tea break on the final day as due to poor light players weren’t able to see anything. India was targeted for the 275 and they were on 8 for 0 in the fourth innings and in about 54 overs.
The Gabba Test only had 214 overs of play, which is usually about halfway through the third day of the match. However, the weather caused major disruptions, with only 13.2 overs played on Day 1 and 33.1 overs on Day 3. Despite the weather setbacks, Australia managed to take control, scoring 445 runs in their first innings and putting India in a tough spot at 74 for 5.
The visitors got a bit of luck from the weather and the fact that Australia was down to just two frontline fast bowlers after Josh Hazlewood pulled up with a calf strain. India also got key contributions from KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, who both scored important half-centuries, as well as a crucial 47-run 10th-wicket stand between Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah, which helped them avoid the follow-on late on Day 4.
Australia tried to convert their strong position into a win, but the weather kept getting in the way. After only four overs were possible in the morning, their batters went after the bowling aggressively, briefly giving India a slim chance of pulling off an unlikely victory. Jasprit Bumrah took out Usman Khawaja for the fourth time in the series, and India quickly had Australia at 33 for 5, with Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj picking up key wickets.
Travis Head and Alex Carey added a quick 27-run partnership off just 22 balls, and then Pat Cummins hit two sixes and two fours in his 10-ball knock of 22. With limited bowling options, Australia declared at 89/7, hoping to create a result with just three bowlers. India’s openers faced 2.1 overs before bad light forced the umpires to call an early Tea break.
Earlier in the morning, India’s last-wicket pair added eight more runs to their overnight total of 252 before Akash Deep was stumped for 31, ending the crucial 47-run stand that had helped India avoid the follow-on the evening before.
