Ranji Trophy Day 2 : Update

Ranji Trophy Day 2 : Update

Shardul saved Mumbai the blushes on Day 2 of their Ranji fixture against J&K.

It has mostly been a day for bowlers in India, but the main highlight is the big names who didn't score much. Rohit got 2 runs, Gill made 4, and Pant scored just 1, while Jadeja took five wickets. Here's a quick overview of how the day went for each group.
Group A
J&K lost with seven wickets but still led as Mumbai scored 120 all out
Maharashtra’s lower-order battles against Baroda
Services gain ground after a late start against Tripura
Odisha leads against Meghalaya
Group B
Rajasthan moves ahead as Khaleel records his first five-wicket haul against Vidarbha.
Desai takes nine wickets, showcasing Gujarat's strong performance against Uttarakhand.
Tanmay Agarwal scores a century as Hyderabad leads against Himachal.
Shaikh Rasheed scores a century to boost Andhra's efforts against Puducherry.
Group C
Jaiswal takes six wickets, putting Bengal in charge against Haryana.
Smaran supports Karnataka as they recover after Punjab scores just 55 runs.
Nidheesh's five wickets highlight Kerala's strong performance against MP.
Lokahura scores a century, helping Bihar compete against UP.
Group D
Andre Siddarth scored a hundred to help Tamil Nadu against Chandigarh.
Delhi responded strongly after Jadeja took five wickets in Rajkot.
Agrim Tiwary scored 99 not out to save Chhattisgarh from defeat against Jharkhand.
The Day 2 : Bengal vs Haryana & Mumbai vs Jammu & Kashmir
Bengal is in trouble against Haryana after managing to bowl them out for 157. Bengal has already lost two wickets within the first seven overs, both taken by Sumit Kumar. Newcomer Ankit Chatterjee and the experienced Sudip Gharami now need to work hard to fight through the challenging morning conditions. Bengal needs a win to keep their knockout hopes alive, so any lead they get will give them a big advantage.
J&K Escorts by 86: Rohit takes the responsibilities again
At the Sharad Pawar Academy, the game was getting interesting as 20 wickets had already fallen and they hadn’t completed an hour of Day 2. Mumbai will bat in the first hour again, just like yesterday, as Jammu & Kashmir finished their innings at 206. This gives Mumbai a lead of 86 runs, which isn't huge but could help if they take early wickets.
Rohit Sharma, who missed an opportunity yesterday, has another chance to play well and keep Mumbai steady. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, and the rest of the team will also support him. As defending champions, Mumbai needs to win this match to improve their position for the knockout stages, especially since they are facing a team higher up on the points table.
R Smaran's first Maiden A-one Century
From the Junior Circuit Karnataka picks up the R Samaran and he proves that he belongs here. On a green surface where Punjab finished with 55, Samaran batted in his best way and brought Karnataka to a position where they might be able to get a victory.
Smaran kicked off the 2023-24 domestic season with an impressive performance, scoring 829 runs, including a century in the final against Uttar Pradesh, which helped Karnataka win the CK Nayudu Trophy. Before this season, the team management showed their full support for him in all formats.
He also played an important role in their recent victory at the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and now, in his 8th first-class match, Smaran has scored his first century in red-ball cricket. He is a skilled and graceful left-handed batsman who has honed his skills in age-group cricket and has now moved up to the first-class level.
Right now, Karnataka is at 247 for 4, with their lead nearing 200 runs. Smaran is batting with Abhinav Manohar.
Rohit making the Situation Better
Rohit Sharma is having a hard time scoring runs and is trying to attack the J&K bowlers today to break out of his slump. The new ball is swinging and the pitch at the BKC Ground in Mumbai has good bounce. A crowd has gathered to watch Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal open the batting after J&K gained an 86-run lead.
In his first 11 balls, Rohit has already hit two sixes and two fours, quickly reaching 21 runs. This is different from his usual style in red-ball cricket. He was quiet for the first few balls, getting beaten once by Auqib Nabi. But since then, Rohit has responded with confidence, hitting four boundaries.
He could have been out for 1 when he hit a hard shot back to Umar Nazir, but the bowler couldn't catch it. After that, Rohit started hitting aggressively. He pulled a six over backward square, slashed a short ball outside off for four, and added another four in the same region, making it 14 runs in the over.
Rohit’s best shot of the day came in the next over against Nabi. He left a couple of bouncy, swinging balls outside off before charging down to hit a fearless six over long-off.
Rohit Dissmised at 28
If you thought Rohit Sharma’s dismissal yesterday was disappointing for a top Test batter, today’s dismissal won’t be any better. After quickly scoring 21 off 11 balls, Rohit had been playing cautiously for the last 15-20 minutes, blocking and leaving balls with ease.
But in Yudhvir Singh's fifth over (the 14th of the innings), Rohit tried to hit a length ball down the ground but didn’t connect well. He ended up chipping a catch toward midwicket. Abid Mushtaq made an excellent effort, almost turning around and leaping just in time to catch the ball with his right hand. Rohit was out for 28 off 35 balls, with two fours and three sixes.
