Rawal and Hasabnis shine as India secures an easy win over Ireland
Leah Paul also contributed with a fifty as Ireland took advantage of India's sloppy fielding and some wayward bowling.
Pratika Rawal’s impressive 89 overshadowed Gaby Lewis’s 92 as India claimed a comfortable win in the first ODI against Ireland in Rajkot. Chasing a target of 239, India secured the victory with over 15 overs to spare, winning by six wickets and taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Ireland, opting to bat first, faced early setbacks with two quick wickets in the PowerPlay. Titas Sadhu struck early, dismissing Sarah Forbes with an edge to first slip, while Una Raymond-Hoey was run out by a sharp throw from Jemimah Rodrigues. Priya Mishra added to Ireland’s troubles, taking two wickets in two balls, leaving them at 56/4 on a good batting track.
Gaby Lewis and Leah Paul staged a recovery, putting together a crucial 117-run partnership. While Paul was dropped twice, she kept the innings going with a 73-ball 59 that included seven fours before being run out by Harleen Deol. Lewis, Ireland’s captain, reached her fifty off 75 balls and struck 15 fours in her 129-ball innings before falling to a return catch by Deepti Sharma. Arlene Kelly chipped in with a quick 28 at the end, helping Ireland reach 239—a total that seemed unlikely at one stage. On her debut, India’s Sayali Satghare was impressed with figures of 1/43, claiming Kelly's key wicket.
India’s chase started strong with a 70-run opening stand led by stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana. Her quick 41 off 29 balls included six boundaries and a six before she fell to Freya Sargent. Pratika Rawal then anchored the innings, reaching her fifty off 70 balls and staying at the crease until India was seven runs away from victory.
Despite Aimee Maguire’s three-wicket haul, Ireland struggled to defend the total. Maguire dismissed Harleen Deol and Jemimah Rodrigues cheaply, but Tejal Hasabnis steadied India’s chase with an unbeaten 53 off 46 balls, sealing the win in style.
