Rickelton and Stubbs Bring Out South Africa's Significant Victory
Chasing 272, Ireland put up a poor performance with the bat to lose the game by 139 runs.
Rickelton’s and Stubbs's massive partnership of 152 runs made South Africa get their big win against Ireland at the opening ODI in Abu Dhabi. After managing to tie in the T20I series South Africa has made a great start to the ODI Series as their bowlers deliver 139 run win.
Ryan Rickelton hit a boundary on the first ball of the game, but Ireland quickly took control. Tony de Zorzi tried to pull a short ball from Mark Adair but only managed to top-edge it. Temba Bavuma was initially given out leg-before-wicket on the first ball but the decision was overturned. However, he was soon outbowled by a great delivery from Craig Young. Rassie van der Dussen got out for a duck, edging a delivery from Adair to third slip, continuing South Africa's tough start.
At 39/3 South Africa was highly required to stabilise their innings as there were more than 40 overs left in their innings. In the next three overs, South Africa was able to score 2 runs only
But Tristan Stubbs broke the shackles after hitting the four. As expected, South Africa’s run rate didn’t get better until the midway mark despite however, Rickelton and Stubbs having given the three sixes until then. Rickelton reached fifty for the first time in his ODI career and then hit two sixes and a boundary off legspinner Gavin Hoey. At the same time, Stubbs also reached his half-century, and South Africa took control of the game as the run rate went above five.
Now the boundaries have started hitting frequently as Stubs was able to add two other sixes to his name as South Africa and put his steps towards the big finish. But there is another twist in the game when Ricelton wasn’t able to make the century. The batsman hit the ball with the inside edge, causing it to hit the stumps and he left the field just nine runs short of a century. This wicket gave Ireland a good opportunity to make a comeback. Adair then dismissed the other well-set batsman, Stubbs, who had scored 79. Ireland continued to take wickets at regular intervals, preventing South Africa from gaining any momentum. In the end, Lungi Ngidi's unbeaten score of 20 helped South Africa reach just over 270 runs.
South Africa's total seemed like enough to win easily as Ireland lost half of their team in just 14 overs. Ngidi took out Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie early on. Lizaad Williams then got key wickets of Harry Tector and Curtis Campher, and Ottneil Baartman also joined the party, reducing Ireland to 61/5. From there, Ireland couldn't recover as wickets kept falling. George Dockrell's 21 was the highest score for Ireland, showing their poor batting performance. In the end, Ireland was all out for 132, and the two teams will play again at the same venue on Friday for the second ODI.
