Ricky Ponting: Joe Root Best Positioned to Break Sachin Tendulkar's Test Record
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting feels that England batter Joe Root will surpass legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of most runs in Test cricket in the coming years.
Ricky Ponting the Australia Captain thinks that England's Joe Root has the capacity to break Sachin Tendulkar's World Record.
The legend Sachin Tendulkar who have secured 15921 runs in 200 matches along with two World Records. And let’s not get into his ODI feat. Now the main question that arises is did anyone was able to break the record of Sachin Tendulkar. James Anderson of England came close to reaching 200 Test wickets but stopped at 188. Now, his teammate and former England captain Joe Root is the closest to achieving this milestone. Legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting believes Root has the best chance to do it.
Players like Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson are also in the mix, but their recent performances in Test cricket haven't been outstanding. Additionally, India, New Zealand, and Australia don't play as many Test matches as England.
Root is able to become the Seventh Batter in history who has crossed the 12,000 runs mark- which he received recently in the Edgbaston Test against the West Indies. With 12,027 runs in 143 Tests at an average of 50.11, including 32 centuries and 63 fifties, Joe Root is currently the seventh-highest run-scorer in Test cricket. He is close to surpassing Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara (12,400 runs) and his former teammate Alastair Cook (12,472 runs). Sachin Tendulkar holds the record with 15,921 runs from 200 Tests.
Root Can Do That
Ricky Ponting who has secured the second position in the list of h 13,378 runs from 168 Tests said that Root has the potential to do that. He is 33 Years old and behind more than 3000 runs. It will fall on how many they will be able to play and if they play around 10 to 14 matches in a year then they can surely secure 800 to 1,000 runs a year, and like that, it will take 3 to 4 Years to secure the place.
Ponting mentioned that Root needs to stay motivated and hungry for runs, and his age is an advantage in aiming for the Test record. "If his hunger's still there, then there's every chance that he could do it. He is someone that, in the last couple of years, has gotten better and better," Ponting said.
Batters are often said to reach their prime in their early 30s, and Root has certainly done that," Ponting said. "His conversion rates have been the key factor. He seems to have overcome his previous struggle to turn half-centuries into big scores.
"Four or five years ago, Root was often getting to 50 but struggling to convert those into hundreds," Ponting said. "Recently, he's turned that around. Almost every time he reaches 50 now, he goes on to score a big hundred. That's been the real change for him," he added.
