Rohit: Our Lack of Sweeps and Reverse Sweeps Cost Us the Match

Rohit Sharma said Indian Players were to dominate the spinners given the condition but Sri Lanka kept them under pressure through the series.

He mentioned that India needed to be more aggressive against the spinners because of the conditions. He also said that Sri Lanka kept the pressure on them throughout the series.
Rohit Sharma believes that India should have used the sweep shot more effectively, as several batters were dismissed playing it throughout the series. He noted that Sri Lanka's batters excelled in this area, stretching India's field square of the wicket.
In the third ODI, Sri Lanka scored 173 of their 248 runs (about 70%) square of the wicket, with only 38 runs coming down the ground.
He also added that while sweeping Sri Lanka was more consistent with sweeps and using their chances. And noted that most runs weren’t scored down the ground and that the team didn’t use their feet as much as expected.
He emphasized the importance of using sweeps to target the deep square leg and midwicket areas, which India failed to do. He pointed out that the lack of sweeps, reverse sweeps, and paddle sweeps, along with overusing their feet, made a difference in their performance.
He mentions Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando and said they were able to score more runs square of the wicket. And their sweeping and turning were forcing the fielder to shift left and right. Their batting was smart meanwhile ours was not.
He said the teams need to find out where mainly they made the mistakes definitely they didn’t well against spin. The need to dominate on such wickets, noting that the Sri Lankan spinners consistently kept India under pressure throughout all three games.
It's unusual to disapprove of India's batting against spin, given that their limited-overs pitches have been favorable for batting recently. Additionally, Indian batters are typically well-versed in playing on turning tracks, a point that Rohit Sharma and others have highlighted throughout the series.
The current situation is to allow each batter to develop their own approach to turning tracks. Some might choose to move forward more frequently, while others may prefer to stay back in their creases. The idea is that effective spin play varies from one batter to another.
It's better to leave that on an individual plan instead of telling what to do and which shot needs to be played. The players are here to play so much cricket and telling them to do something different could be uncomfortable for them and not ideal.
Rohit Sharma emphasized the importance of individual plans for taking on bowlers and choosing the right shots. He highlighted that it all begins with training, noting that the players work hard in the nets whenever they have the chance. He doesn't see any lack of effort when it comes to trying different shots.
Even though his team didn't score much, Rohit was the best batter in the series. He scored 157 runs with a strike rate of 141.44 in three games. As an opener, he had good batting conditions. In the first two games, where he scored fifties, he made sure the batters after him didn't have to worry about the run rate.
"I knew scoring runs during the powerplay was crucial. After that, the pitch would slow down, the ball would turn, and the field would spread out. With only two fielders outside the ring, we had to take risks. I took those risks whenever I felt I could pressure the bowler. Any extra runs help the team for the remaining 40 overs." Rohit said.
He said his efforts were to make sure that he would be able to score as many runs as he could. He doesn’t want to bowl his wicket way past the powerplay. He wished to continue the intent and the momentum but got bowled out after certain shots. He was straightforward while batting.
